I'm trying to help a buddy play. Keeps getting a message ' Runtime error'. (Vista)
    Cannot start the game. (vanilla)

Would you need to know laptop stats?

My first suggestion would be to make sure he is using 'Run as Administrator' - that solved all the issues I had on my Vista laptop.

EDIT: Ahhh, you found that advce elsewhere too - fair enough. We will need a Windows 7 thread here soon enough.

    1. make sure the game is set to compatibility XP SP2
    2. make sure it is set to run as administrator (oddly enough, I had to set it manually on win7, even though UAC is disabled and I am administrator)
    3. run the game from TFE-X, not by running the EXE directly. (also, you must do that if you want the "full HP from level ups" and other some such to work)

    "TFE-X"?
My buddy isn't using Front-End. Just vanilla.

Peculiar as it sounds, we don't really provide support for the vanilla game: thats Atari's job. Your friend's best option is to install the Co8 mod.

And if folks knew, they would answer - silence generally means no-one knows beyond what has already been suggested.

Ah. Ok. Though it seems the official Atari forums haven't been used in 2 years. Unless I'm looking at the wrong thing.
