Is there a good set of equipment to start with? I'm basically just buying a little of the cheapest of everything.

Is there a recommended starting kit? What stuff do people buy? What stuff is recommended?

    (I'm running the 5.5.0 mod-pack)

    Thanks in advance

Well, consider yer party, first of all. A weapon of each kind to make all then "dangerous" is a beggining. But there are someones that are very expensive, and I avoid then. If ya have focus in a specific weapon, ya will have it at hand, so, ya dont need to buy it. But otherwise, dont equip yer fighter with a greatsword, give him a greatax or a glaive instead. Unfortunatly, bows and crossbows are very, very expensive, and I try to avoid then. A Ranger archer shall use a sword for a level or two, and the spellcaster in the party will be useful with a sling in place of a crossbow, if not focused in the use of ranged weapons - wich is a waste of feats for a spellcaster.

A Thief's tool for some rogue its not very important, becose the first chest ya will find is in the Moathouse, where ya will find the first thief's tool to loot - of course, if ya runing the chaotic neutral opening, ya will need a thief's tool.....

About armours, well... Its a big problem. I hardly have enough gold to equip all my party with good armour. I just make sure that my melee hiters will have a chainmail - or a breastplate if the hiter in question have a Dex 16 or more - and put some leather over the sholder of the thieves and archers. Its enough at the beggining of the game. If ya have more than one melee hiter, thy a couple of that chainshirts.

Shields are always the wooden ones. Cheap and eficient. And no buclers at this point.

All this make yer party fully equiped, obviously without the best equipments, but...

Like ADG states depends on your party. I will tell you what I do. If the member is a melee type I buy studded leather armor especially if they have a high DEX. (If you have a low DEX then chainmail is best to start with because they will get hit more.) I equip the melee types with longswords or battleaxes as weapons and a wooden shield.

If you have a cleric. I equip the cleric with studded or leather armor. I give the cleric a mace as a weapon and a wooden shield. If the member is a druid , the druid is restricted to non-metal armor and weapons. I equip the druid with leather armor, a club or a spear (allows the druid to attack from the second rank) and wooden shield.

The rogue I equip with leather armor and a shortbow with arrows. You can buy the thieves tools if you want, but you normally find them early in the game.

The wizard or sorcerer should not wear armor. Buy some leather clothes or a robe. I arm them with a light crossbow. This way the wizard or sorcerer can still serve as artillery after the spells run out.

I still have money left over to buy a few healing potions.
    But YMMV.

I don't waste a lot of time or money on beginning stuff. Just make sure the fighters have melee weapons, the "rogue" has a ranged weapon and barbarian armor for the two front fighters. This'll hold you until you get to the moathouse, where they just hand everything you need to you, like better armor, lots of weapons, clothes and assorted whatnots.
