hi, i'm trying to edit the protos.tab file using Phalzyr's editor, in order to create a new vrock(yeah, i'm following the instruction in the topped topic). well, i do everything i have to(copy original Vrock, change his id to 15000(i have the latest Co8 mod installed, so all id's to 14999 are used)). ok, when i try to play and add the character i edited, the game crashes. i checked, and found out that was the protos.tab file that wasn't right: the third field of the row was blank or changed into a "bp_trap_magical" or some other stuff(i tried to change the id or just restore the field to Vrock, no matter what, the protos.tab file keeps on being a bitch). now, am i doing something wrong? please help :help: thanks in advance.
Proto-Ed can be a bitch - mine just ruined the KotB protos.tab a few minutes ago (I backed up a few minutes before that, so its all good ). To just do one thing like u r suggesting, learn to use ToEEWB. Proto-Ed's appeal lies in its (limited) abilities to do lots of things at once, or at least see them.
You sure are doing something wrong, certain item types MUST be in the protos.tab number range that represent's that kind of item, the 14000 - 14999 range is where your vrock should be, there are spaces available, try putting it in 14799 instead, it should work ok then. 15000 - 15999 range are for magical traps 4000 - 4999 are for weapons 6000 - 6999 are for armor and clothing 12000 - 12999 are for generic items purring things in the wrong number range will cause problems.
It doesn't delete that field. to change an entry in the proto ed, you need to edit the line field that you want, hit the enter key to save the data to that field, then either tab, arrow or mouse click out of the editted field. If you tab, enter or mouse click out before hitting enter all edits in that field will be lost, Period. Then to make the changes permanent you need to save the file, or again all edits will be lost. It works like a database engine and not like a speadsheet editor, or other windows programs you may be used to. It can be a little bit counter-intuative that way so I hope this helped you. The edits to the vrock in that tutorial don't work as advertised, I believe this to be due to some of the other changes made to the game since it was written. I followed the same path of discovery when I first started this, I think the reason it is still stickied, is because it does help you gain knowledge of the fields and their functions, as well as a basic familiarity with the concepts of how the game uses the database tables and message files to operate. MY next step was the World builder tutorials, which are consise and easy to follow and the results do work. So you get a sense of accomplishment by completing them. May I suggest a next step after that would be to work your way through Ted's tutorial's posted on his Blog. After completing those, you should have a pretty good overview of how everything works together. Good luck and I wish you sucess in your modding efforts
thank you for the help, i tried to do like you said-hit enter for every change i make- but still, when i save and then load the file, i find that field blank again(and yeah, the game keeps on crashing). i also tried the toee world editor. i managed to create a new prototype and its description, save, but then again, when i load the file there's only the description left, not the prototype-i get to the description, click it and then click on 'Look up proto', but it says that the prototype is missing(when i first loaded the protor.tab file that i edited with the other tool, it was the description that was missing, the prototype was there(No Description -> #14799)). i'm not giving up anyway, i'm still trying to get it to work. Edit: ok, now it looks like its working. now i'm gonna try and customize it/him, to build up a powerful Vrock.
