This is a thread-o-mancy of an old thread from 3 years ago. A hell of a lot of us were wizards or perhaps, rogues, if we made a player charecter based on this. Once upon a time, in Cepheid Variable, we tried to figure out a way to produce character stats based on our actual selves. I can't really remember all of it very well, and it was based on AD&D 1 rules (I think) and it's kind of simplistic: STR - # lbs can military press 10 times in one set / 10 INT - 10 + .2 x (IQ - 100) [Stanford-Benet] WIS - 10 + (Age - 20) / 5 (MUCH argument over this one) DEX - # seconds can stand on tip-toe (heel off floor) on one leg - no touching - average for multiple attempts - 18 max (everyone got good at this) CON - # of laps around football field track in 30 minutes CHAR - voted on by other players Any stat that was "unknown" could be 10. I think the idea was ripped off from a Dragon magazine article, which I have never seen. It's kind of stupid, since you play D&D to get away from being the loser that you are. I am interested in ideas for better ways to determine your D&D Stats.
You could just use this questionnaire/program to figure it out. Click Here for AD&D Stats Quiz BTW, here's my stats according to the quiz; STR: 16 INT: 15 WIS: 16 DEX: 16 CON: 14 CHA: 15
Great quiz! I like it better than mine. Using it, my scores were: Str 13 Int 17 Wis 15 Dex 14 Con 11 Char 16 On mine (CV's), they were: Str 13 Int 18 Wis 17 Dex 18 (acquired skill) Con 12 Char 15 I like the Dex score for the quiz since you get better at my test the more you take it. My only complaint is that the quiz is self-reporting, and therefore unreliable. Whereas mine is fairly objective as it doesn't count unless others in the group witness it. Thanks, Sirchet!
I have seen this test before, and taken it. Personally I think it is way too easy to skew the answers in your favor, even subconsciously. Strangely, my Wisdom wound up being my highest Stat, (15) above my Intelligence (13). Excuse me, I have a Bachelors Degree and graduated with Honors and I only get a 120 IQ?!. This is strange because most of my friends, including some very smart people, consider me a very intelligent, but lacking in common sense. There has to be a better method out there. An idea: Go off the descriptions of the numbers. 6-7 is Noticably Below Average. If you have some cleanliness issues that other's notice, or are the "90 lb weakling", then these numbers may be best for those particular Stats. 8-9 is Below Average, but not by much. If you a a little clumsy, or a cold a bit more often then the average, this could be your Stat. 10-11 is Average. This means, I assume, the average human person, not the average American or average person living in the Medieval Age. 12-13 is Above average. We would all love our every one of our Stats to be this or higher, but honestly, truthfully, can they be? Can every DnDer or Co8er really be above the norm in all areas? 14-15 is Exceptional. These are the people that everyone notices because they are good at something (certainly not good at everything [i.e. every Stat] but noticeably above the norm in some area(s). 16-17 is Near Perfection. Think Sly Stallone in his Prime for Strength, or Jessica Biel for Charisma (at least the comeliness part). Insert whatever gorgeous woman or man you'd like instead of Biel. Marilyn Monroe was probably only a 16 comeliness, and probably fell shorter than that for her overall Charisma (it was good, but she was a bit weak-willed by all reports). 18 is Human Perfection. Anyone who claims this should be rich off their skill, and well adjusted enough to not claim this. Think Arnie at his physical peak for Strength, or Einstein and Hawkings, among others, for Intelligence. I am smart, but nowhere near the league of those gentlemen. At best I give myself a 15 Intelligence, but as I took the Mensa test twice, and failed by one number, 139 both times, about 10 years apart, I set myself at a 14. So, when thinking of yourself for paying yourself, ask "Is my Stat for this Below Average (if you get sick a lot or have a permanent disease, perhaps an 8 or even a 6 for Constitution is accurate), Average (no one has ever told me I am bad or good at this Stat, for example), Above Average (I get compliments on this sometimes and appreciated for it by others), Exceptional (I get sought out for this Stat and no one denies that it is awesome), or Perfect (God - if you believe in him/her/them, loads of practice, good genes, and the force of my own will has made this not only better than everyone I know, but as good as I have ever heard of). No one should ever give themselves a 5 or below in any Stat. If you do, I hope it is your Charisma, as you lack the self-confidence to either have, or raise that 5 or lower Stat to at least some semblance of normality. I sincerely doubt there should be any 18s either, and not really many 16-17s. Be honest with yourself, and really think of what you think your Stat should be. Then think of what you think the lowest that Stat could possibly be, and my advice is to go with the lower number (or one category above it). It makes the game more challenging, and probably more real. Of course this is only one person's take on it, but I truly believe it is in the spirit of the game. Don't be a Munchkin (translation- Power Gamer) with yourself, of all things.
Interesting, this is what the quiz recommended by SirChet results in for me... STR:13 DEX:8 CON:13 INT:15 WIS:16 CHR:15 And what character class am I with such stats, I wonder?
A cleric, or paladin maybe a wizard ... you don't have to have amazing stats to be an important and effective part of a party, at least that's what I keep telling myself. ;D
I would suggest Cleric over Mage, but not because of the 16 and 15, becouse of the Dex. A Cleric can make up a lot of AC with Plate and a shield, but a Mage needs a good Dex to not be a human (elf/dwarf/whatever) pincushion! Most of my personal Stats using that table were in the average range, and I think I had one 9 the first time I did it. But some just didn't seem realistic.
