I'm wondering if others have thoughts on what might be causing this. I'm playing on a new PC and am having some lock up issues in the elemental nodes (I've got through pretty the entire game until now without this issue). I'm trying to figure out whether this is a game issue or a system issue (i.e. maybe there's a configuration problem with my new PC). The problem I'm having in the Earth Node is that when I move to a new part of the map the game sometimes stops responding for an inordinately long time (30-120 seconds where the screen is just frozen). Usually after this time the game comes back and performs okay, but a couple times I was forced to end task on the game. The system I'm playing on should have plenty of resources (P4 3GHz, 2GB RAM, GeForce 6800 w/256MB RAM). I've played in the elemental nodes before on a less powerful machine (P4 1.8GHz, 500MB RAM, GeForce 3 w/64MB RAM) and noticed performance issues, but not nearly as pronounced as what I'm seeing currently. Once major difference between my current machine and my previous is that I'm now running WIN XP Professional w/SP2 whearas previously I ran WIN2K w/SP4. My ToEE installation includes ToEE (of course), Atari patch 1, atari patch 2, Co8 Mod (3.0.4 I think is the version... it's the latest posted) and Livonya's mod. I'm just wondering if others are zipping along through the elemental nodes w/o any problems and if so, how does your system compare to mine? Is there some bad programming in the game that can lead to these kinds of problem regardless of how powerful a PC is... or does it seem that the game should be performing much better (... potentially indicating some sort of issue with my system?). Thanks, Marceror
just about everyone seems to have some problem in the nodes. its part of the game but as some others have pointed out one way to lessen it is to scroll slowling and moving your party in short spurts. it seems worse if you try to scroll all the way across the map.
That's helpful info. I've been scrolling all over the place figuring that my machine should be able to handle it. I guess that's a no no.
It happens to me too. And yes, it depends from many things. I've seen that it is better to dismiss spells if you don't need them anymore, as well as animal companions or summoned creatures. The bigger the party, the more the game will freeze, even if in 90% of cases it will, soon or later, often later, come back to normality. I know it is not a great help, but that is. PLaying with a single PC party, I saw that I have really less problems than with a party of 8.
Trying to scroll while the party is still moving will almost always result in a lock-up. (Which means, as mentioned, you should ditch any animal companions you have since they, especially the wolf, like to dance around at any moment the party isn't moving.)
My best results... ...in avoiding problems also included turning off the scroll ahead feature on the mouse, setting scroll speed to 1, and also scouting ahead invisibly. This opens up area which you can scroll to, and then click to have your party advance up to the invisible character. The other points have already been made, and are good advice to follow.
