I'm sure this has come up before. Have the modders considered having a camp where ALL of the NPCs would go? Adding anyone to your party, where if you drop them their gone for good is no fun. Why take them at all unless you plan to keep them for the whole game? I like using the NPCs, but would love to see a change where they would all meet you at the Welcome Wench.
Most NPC's in TOEE have a sort of life they lead and it might detract from the overall game world if they just dropped everything and waited for us like a spouse would do. If you think about it, even the NPC's you see in the WW aren't always there because they are out doing their stuff, granted some only seem to just go upstairs to their room. This is of course just my opinion.
I like this Idea, creating new special NPC's that gather at a camp for Hire, Like a sorta merc camp out, where you can hire a NPC specialest. I would suggest a camp place on an edge of homlet somwheres that is mostly un-used any way. beause Sir chet is right in a way, most of the built in NPC's have some other role to play in homlet or NULB (they lead their pointless lives). In a way if your EVIL , killing them all has little effects on the actual environment (they only help the grass grow taller thats about it). as for me; if I play an Evil role, I usually lead all the NPC's into a groosom death and take all there loot, and go back for another follower, muhahahaha. I would say create new ones! place them on the edge of the map where there is a new TILE painted like a merc camp out. (more followers to use and/or abuse) GOOD idea  plus there is allready MERC NPC's for hire in TOEE, in homlet. But having an indepent group of mercs with new character and classes is a good idea for more options and bonus content.
I do like the idea of a merc camp just outside of town with new companions, some could even have a side quest of their own. Maybe you could even use one of the houses in Nulb as a merc's guild type setup?
I suppose to accommodate Sir Chet's preference that some NPCs have lives of their own to live, they might only show up at the Welcome Wench or where ever, occasionally. But building up an NPC, letting them go never to see them again seems like a waste of time. They should go somewhere. Have the orcs in the dungeon go to Nulb. I'm okay with Otis only being usable a couple of times, because he's overly powerful relatively speaking. But the other folks who just say "later forever" should have a place where they can be found again, and for convenience purposes preferably congregating in a couple of spots.
