I am a big fan of school RPGs and was thinking TooE might scratch the itch. I probably don't need the manual since I am pretty familiar with D&D rules. Any suggestions on where to pick up this game cheap?

    thanks

I picked up the jewel case on Amazon the other day for $3.99 with free shipping. Can't beat that.

It's a great game, especially with the co8 mod. I've owned it for about a week and have been playing it every minute I can spare :D

I just wish there were more games like it. A more open game with the same combat system but without the plot railroading would be incredible.

I don't think that I would call this railroading. Every adventure has to have a goal, but it should be open to ways to achieve that goal. In TOEE, there are a number of ways to get to the end (frontal assault, sneak and attack, charm everything) and different goals depending on alignment (kill Hedrack and Z, destroy the Orb and bring down the temple, kill Hedrack and take over, serve Iuz forever) as well as different quests that you can complete in different ways depending on alignment (eg. a good party might decide to pay Mikey whereas an evil party might decide to kill him). That's why I would like to see Ranth's mod, because it sounds like he is trying to leave open different ways to achieve the quests he is designing.

Well, I guess maybe it isn't railroading - but it's still pretty linear even though you have choices along the way. I just meant the way you have to do X in order to get to Y.

For instance, you can't get to Nulb before you take care of the Moathouse. You can't get to the Temple until you learn about it from Nulb. Etc. I just meant that an open game where you could just wander and stumble upon things would be fun. You might just get yourself killed by something when roaming around at low level, but at least you would have the option to get yourself killed instead of "Go here, then here, then here..." etc.

It would have to be a totally different game - ToEE just isn't suited for that style. I just meant I would love to see an open ended game built with the same combat system. Kinda like a roguelike set in a D&D universe with turn based combat.

You mean a more open game like Morrowind or Oblivion where you can go off on side tangents, wander around the countryside/cities and eventually when you want to come back to the main quest line? Unfortunately roguelikes do not usually have multiple side quest lines. or multiple paths to solve the main quest. If you are playing NetHack it is basically wander around, kill enemies, find supplies, level up, find your way to the lowest level, get the quest item and return.

I look for more character, group or NPC interaction. While you are at it throw in a feww riddles and puzzles.

I'm all about being open ended as far as where a party can go is concerned. I recall with great fondness the adventures I ran as a GM hundreds of years ago and a low level party got it in their mind to to check out a place that has been talked about for the last 50 years around several towns. They wandered into the lair of a mummy and got cornholed pretty badly, lol. And in a computer game it would be great because you can at least try it again at some other time, unlike with paper and pencil.

I think that's a huge problem with ToEE. I think a party of 3rd level characters should run into a mind flayer or a beholder or something, and watch them scatter like escaping convicts, lol.

The game is considered old in today's standards. I picked my copy off cheap, dirt cheap.

Combat, combat and combat. What variety!

These all pertain to the last one or two encounters. A string of different quests catering to different alignments would have been nicer.

Choice A and choice B times 1000 makes two thousand choices! Just like Mass Effect! Kick ass! [/sarcasm]

I'm not sure what any of your points mean, other than you don't seem to like the game. If you don't like it, don't play it!!!
