Hi there. I picked up this game the other day on a whim after being incredibly dissapointed with Neverwinter Nights 2. After searching for the latest patches and subsequently being recommened to this website I modded my game up and got stuck into it. and oh my god. This has too be one of the most underated Roleplaying games of all time. I have played alot of D&D games (Both baldurs gates, NWN ect) and this has to be the most beautiful rendition of the D&D ruleset I have ever come across. The combat is perfect and the attention to detail is amazing. I cant believe I passed over this game for so many years thinking it was just a BG clone. Great work on the modifications. I am almost tempted to play the atari patched game only to really get a feel for how it was but I cant bring myself to do it, for the fear of being a waste of time. Its criminal to think there is a toolset floating around there somewhere which atari wont let be released. Best of luck to you, in your efforts to remedy this.... Anyway, while im here I might as well ask a few questions of you all. (I have used search couldnt seem to find the answers) 1. Im playing with a full custom made party of 5. I have never hired any of the NPC's in the world as yet. Am I missing out on anything important? 2. The implementation of weapon finese seems a little vague. Am I wasting a feat if I take weapon finese with my rogue? 3. I encountered a NPC in the temple which mentioned another city Verbobinc? (sp?) and said they would mark it on my map. Upon checking the map there doesnt seem to be anything new. what gives? 4. Anything else, that you think I should know as a new player to get the best experience possible out of the game. Currently playing a Lawful Evil Party, all pure class. Warrior, Ranger, Rogue, Wizard, Cleric.
1. No 2. Weapon Finess means, that you(r rogue) will be applying its dex bonus to attack rolls instead of strength when usning light weapons or raipers. 3. Not sure about that one - once you find fragarach turuko will take you to verbobonc IIRC.
I'm glad your enjoying the game, the unpatched game is buggy and pretty poor in comparison to the Co8 modded game, try it by all means, just be prepared for the worst. 1. I recently completed the main part of the Co8 modded game (with 5.0.0 and 5.0.4 CMF installed) with a party of 5, with no NPC's and ended up with an average group level of 14. You could certainly take NPC's with you, they take loot and a share of the XP and certain NPC's (Oohlgrist, Scorrp and Darley) will prevent shopkeepers from talking to you, Zaxis is among my favourites, and ELmo is really handy if your struggling early on. 2. Small characters can finesse tiny bladed weapons (like daggers, the tiny rapier and not much else), medium characters can finesse a few more small and tiny weapons, and the rapier which is a finessable medium sized weapon. 3. With the 5.0.3 or higher CMF installed Verbobonc will be listed as one of the known locations in the world map screen, but there is no icon to click on, you would have to click on the name to start your journey there. 4. Considering your install has mention of Verbobonc, and your group is Lawful Evil, make sure you complete your Vignette quest, as Toruko has had his plot line expanded slightly. Try not to craft things your not going to use as you'll be burning XP and preventing your casters from casting the new higher level spells, like Delayed Blast fireball and greater Tenser's Transformation to name just two, that said, make sure you craft Icy Burst weapons when you get the chance, preferably make them Holy as well, as it will make some of the larger and more painful enemies fall more easilly in combat. And have fun.
Definitely not a waste of time but I think you need to have a lot of patience and love the game a lot to work through the bugs. I still play through the original form from time to time. Just to spot changes more than anything else.
ToEE's NPCs are nowhere near as rich or fleshed-out as BG's, but there have been some efforts made to improve upon them. Shiningted's 'Playful NPCs' mod (which is included in the latest Co8 modpack) adds a fair amount of banter amongst NPCs and makes them a bit more interesting to have around. IMO you shouldn't just ignore them; they can add to the experience in small ways.
Thanks for the replies guys. With the weapon finesse thing, perhaps I worded it a little incorrectly. I understand what it does, but I guess my real question is do you think its worthwhile taking for a rogue? I assumed that this feat would make them a bit better in combat, but I take this will not apply to shortswords? just daggers and rapiers? Also have never been very big on crafting in games. (didnt touch it in NWN2) can anyone give me a brief run down on the specifics of crafting in TOEE. I noticed that the craft item feat said something along the lines that items could only be crafted that the character was proficient in using. Does that mean my wizard could only craft robes? daggers and staffs? thanks again
I would say that "yes, go on with Weapon Finesse". In a Rogue, specially. Why? Because of the tumble-flank-sneak chain. You need him to have good DEX so it helps you tumble, it helps your AC (I believe that your rogue won't be wearing heavy armors ) and it helps your roguish skills. So, unless you get some pretty good dice when you create your PC, STR would be a couple of points below DEX. If it's something like Dex 16-Str12, for instance, Weapon Finesse could add you a +2 to attack rolls: more that Weapons Focus, i.e. This is even more useful if you have a Gnome or Halfling, because of the STR decrease. The lack here is that you only could use this feat with weapons that deal low damage (except the Tiny Rapier), but hey, your rogue's profit will come if you Sneak Attack with him . I really choose a Sneak Attack with a Dagger over a Longswords attack, for example. IIRC, shortswords could be used for Sneak Attacks, but only with Medium Characters. I guess that the same goes with some bludgeoning weapons, like the Light Mace. Oh, and here's a nice crafting thread, I hope it helps: http://www.co8.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4607 (Look at Allyx's post, #4)
My rogue is human. dex is 18 and str is 13, so i guess its a good option in my case provided Weapon finese works with shortswords. Thanks for the link.

you can sneak attack with any weapon. finessable weapons (medium creature) Unarmed strike Dagger Dagger, punching Mace, light Sickle Axe, throwing Hammer, light Handaxe Kukri Pick, light Sword short Rapier* Kama Sai Siangham Tonfa *is the only finessable and power attackable weapon
One thing that is confusing with weapon finese, is seems to imply that you must select the weapon you want to finese, but it doesnt give you an option. Is this a bug, or does it just apply to any weapon.
I think thats a break with official rules: normally (I think) you specify the weapon to finesse, like weapon focus or weapon specialisation: in ToEE though, you just take the feat and any relevant weapon becomes affected.
Weapon Finesse Prerequisite Base attack bonus +1. Benefit With a light weapon, rapier, whip, or spiked chain made for a creature of your size category, you may use your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier on attack rolls. If you carry a shield, its armor check penalty applies to your attack rolls. Special A fighter may select Weapon Finesse as one of his fighter bonus feats. Natural weapons are always considered light weapons.
If you aren't sure whether a weapon is "finess"-able, just equip it and click on the +?? next to "primary attack" and it'll show you a breakdown of all of your attack bonuses. If a weapon is finessable you'll notice.
