    Hey people .

I was thinking of buying the game from gog , but I 'd like to ask some questions first :

Is the bug ( read about it in the "known issues" ) with the secret doors expected to be solved ? Are the "known issues" in general expected to be solved ?

Is the game stable in general , or will I be forced to reload often ? Is it expected to be fully stable when the Co8 finishes their work on ToEE ?

( Disclaimer : A serious question , no intention to defame anyone or start a flame - feel free not to answer should you find it inappropriate )

Why , oh God , why did our greatest RPG hope end up getting released with so many problems ? I remember back in the day I almost shat my pants when I read about the mechanics of the game and couldn't wait for it to be released . It was a huge dissapointment , unfortunately .

So , is there hope ? Will this game , after all your hard work and admirable dedication , reach , say , a "post-beta" stable state ?

I think it deserves it , because it would have easily been one of the "great D&D RPG's" . It may still be . But it is my firm belief that for an old game to achieve "immortality status" the stability issue is a must .

Anyway , closing this message , I would like to sincerely thank the Co8 team for the time and the effort dedicated to improve this unfortunate gem of a game .

    Be well .

    Hi Satyros, welcome to Co8.

The secret doors bug will probably never be solved, sadly. It involves core mechanics that are beyond our reach. As to the others, we believe we have already largely eliminated lag, and we are hopeful that we will eventually eliminate jerkstop, but the answering swords and spell permanency bugs will never go away (also core related), though we have a workaround in place for spell permanency.

This varies wildly from player to player and system to system. Personally I almost never experience any instability, and plenty of others report the same smooth sailing all the way through, but others are plagued with frequent crashes and generally poor performance. There is really little rhyme of reason for this. All OS's have had good and bad results, likewise old and new systems, powerful and weak systems, etc. That's just the way it is with ToEE, and absent an engine rewrite, it's going to stay that way.

Troika is known for releasing buggy games, unfortunately, and Tim Cain recently admitted to trying to put too much in and not playtesting enough in a recent RPG Codex interview. This was exacerbated by a tight development schedule and release requirements from Atari.

All we can really do is eliminate as many of the bugs as possible that are accessible by us, and to that end we've already done a lot (though they will never all be fixed). We can't really make it more stable in any other appreciable way, such as optimization, performance, etc.

You're welcome. I do believe it would be worth a try, especially since ToEE on GoG is so cheap.

Secret doors bug still rears its ugly head occasionally(happened to me 3 times out of a few dozen play troughs so it's a pretty rare event)
About stability and bugs what can i say? :depends on a ton of stuff ranging from OS to hardware(for me on a native xp it tended to crash like every half hour or so; while currently under a virtualboxed' xp it goes on for hours with no crashes) so its either gonna be a real smooth experience for u and keep u wondering wtf are people whining about ToEE's instability/buginess so much or u will get to experience frequent crashes, corrupted saves and ton of other nasty stuff or anything in between.
Only 1 certainty : the more exotic yr hardware and OS are the more likely toee is gonna cause issues and u just won't know how its gonna behave on yr pc till u try ;)

i used to have problems back in mod 5 or so but now ive never got the secret door bug, the game can take alot before it starts to give you problems. read the guide for tips like : never use the console and what not. I still play TOEE daily, its one of my favorites and the only one that comes close to getting crafting correct in 3.5

I'd say go for it- My current game is more severely afflicted with secret door bugs and other things than any previous run-through, but the new content that has been (as is still being) added by the genius of Gaear and others, and the sheer variety of different tactics and styles of play allowed by the combat system give really high replay value. I think I'm right in saying that you can access very nearly everything without finding a single secret door- and if you miss one, there's nothign to say it won't pop up next time you start from scratch, leaving you something new for that time. Very non-linear, compared to IWDs and NWN.
