Dear lord is this spell that powerful in the paper version of the game? I started getting my butt kicked when the bosses started having high AC and spell resistance. Then I noticed I had magic missile where otherwise I had just a few burning hands, loaded up all 6 lvl 1 slots with them and started just blowing them away. And with the ones that had resistance to fire and electricity, loaded up 4 empowered lvl 3 magic missiles as well and it was a damn machine gun. I'm just sorry I didn't get a chance to buy greater spell penetration to boost it... Codeguru
It's a very nice 1st level spell. The fact that it negates AC/Dex bonuses is very useful against creatures which are difficult to hit, although high spell resistance will sometimes cause it to fail. I'm not sure if it gets the boost from spell penetration - you'd need to check with someone who plays pen and paper regularly.
Magic Missile does work with Spell Penetration and Greater Spell Penetration. If those two feats are combined you get a +4 against checks against a creature's Spell Resistance. Magic missile is perhaps the most brutal of the first level spells given it's number at 10th level is 5 missiles at 2-5 hit points of damage each.
It *should* get the boost. The most useful IMHO this spell ever is (at least in vanilla TOEE) is against Galeb Duhr.
Yes, but against any seasoned PnP players, you'd find it blocked by the Globe or Minor Globe of Invulnerability in almost every Magic User's defensive inventory. Other things could stop it, too...like Volley, or a Ring of Spell Turning. The Shield spell or a Brooch of Shielding also negate the spell or it's damage. And, of course, spell resistance can also make it useless. Many a fight has ended with a burst of MM's, though, both in this game and in PnP. And, it's one of the few things useful against Wil-o-the Wisps.
