How can you get past the guards to talk with Lareth without killing them all? Do you need massive dialogue stats or what? I've never had any special options talking to the doorman.

You should definitely have a fast talker in your group to represent why you want to see him.

i killed the first gaurd i saw without letting him alert the others... well, actually 3 more nearby ones came and died too.

The main group of gaurds did not see us.

Afterwards I walked to talk to the main guy while wearing one of the capes with the flame on them. They just let me through for saying I am one of the new guys and pointing at the cape... there was no special dialogue symbol either (you get a symbol next to a dialogue option if it was enabled by a roll), so that means ANYONE Wearing a cape can go by. (i cant remember just how MANY capes with that pattern i found all around, I kept some just cause they look nice)

All right, that approach makes sense. I haven't ever in 7 or 8 games had the option to talk my way past the first guard, regardless of any dialogue related skills I had (usually at L3).

I just finished the Lareth fight, and the party had capes on and I tried the dialogue with Lareth but it just went into combat mode. The guards went into combat as soon as Elmo hit the doorway. The ogre attacked right away, even tho we had the capes on. I'm playing Liv1.5.1. I want to see some of the other dialogue options and stuff but it's not working for me. Any suggesstions?

I can think of 3 things:
    1. maybe they saw you killing some of their friends.
    2. maybe the character who spoke to him did not have the right cape (you DONT need a cape for everyone... just the speaker.. i think)
    3. last time i tried this i was playing an evil party, and i dont remember how it worked with a good party. (but i think it did work out fine).

try just going forward with a single character wearing their cape... try reloading from an earlier save and this time being alot more discrete in killing the ones at the front (ie, use ranged attacks)

They may have attacked because Elmo is an npc, the game runs into problems with quests if an npc is your party leader, or you try to use them to change maps. Just a guess.

That is the exact reason, sort of.

The way Troika programed the encounter you can take NPCs and summoned creatures to Lareth without talking to the first guard.

But if a PC goes to close to the first guard then you get dialog.

I changed it so NPCs/PCs all trigger the guard.

I always use a pc to lead and Elmo is a good doorstop/hammer. I get the dialogue with the first guard, 2 lines, then no matter which line I pick, he attacks. We take out the 4 guards in the hallway and move up just to the edge of the guards room. Just as soon as anyone steps in the room, combat ensues. Still haven't seen any dialogue that allows some kind of negoiation.

is elmo wearing one of their capes?

Try having someone else talk to him just for this encounter.

Just so you know, he ONLY activates the first time you walk past. Leave elmo in town, go to him with only pcs, talk to him with one who is wearing a cape. leave, get elmo back, and go back in with elmo, walking SAFELY past the gaurd, and then into larath's chamber.

Keep in mind that if you fight larath then his cronies will likely join him. If you intend to fight him, kill them first, then talk to him.

Just for info, everyone had 'EYE" capes on. Elmo is out in the open area before the door. My lead pc, the cleric, is the only one in the hallway with the first guard. No big deal, I was just curious to see some of the dialogue.
