Now granted, I just started tinkering with this stuff yesterday, so I imagine most of the regulars are much further alng than I am. But I had a thought today, and think it is worth bearing in mind. All these projects, and this community as a whole are fairly new. If past modding endeavors with various games is any indication, in the next few weeks we can expect to see some decent growth, both in community members and in projects being worked on. Since I have yet to see any sign of elitism or lack of cooperation from the community, I can't help but see this as a good thing. Here's what I was thinking about. Many of those who start to join at a later date will be somewhat behind those who have already started. Believe me, i know this as I am struggling along with just one project while some of you are blasting away with seemingly little trouble at many things at a time. The later a person joins, the less they are going to know to begin with. I saw the "modding basics" thread that is sticky'd, but it seems to lack one rather important thing. In my humble opinion, probably the most important thing we need to figure out at this point. I think that in order to make our lives much easier (not to mention those who join later down the line), we need to start making a serious attempt to figure out just how the file/directory architecture of the game works. It seems like you can make a fix in a certain way isong the /mes files, but another fix that seems should work the same doesn't. I think that we need to figure out why, and create an outline for the various interactions between the python scripts, mesfiles, tab files, and the executable. Sorry if my post lacks cohesiveness, but I'm rather doped up on a combination of nyquil and vicks 44 so if this is just preaching to the choir, I apologize. So my question is; Should I start a thread to be sticky'd that deals solely with file/directory system interactions (figuring out where modded .mes files need to go and why, the same for teb files ect.), or do we have something to that effect already and I just didn't see it? Just a thought.
This is an excellent idea. There's a thread about files, and what they do, but not one about how they interact Get crackin'! heh
