    Hey all,

d/l'ed ToEExtract (link from this forum) to open up the dat files and start browsing through, but I get an unhandeled exeption whenever I sttempt to use the program in any other way then just ToEExtract to see the usage message.

I tried putting all files in the root of C in case it was a path problem (Max ath length ia 2^9 - 1 so this shouldn't be an issue, but worth a shot) and finally went so far as to specify a file that doesn't exist trying to force the prog to give me an "Could not open DAT file for reading." error, but it just crashes either way.

Anyone know of any special considerations you had to make when running this utility? I'm sure that I'm using it properly, but I can't get it to do anything without crashing.

    Any help appreciated.

if there's spaces in the file don't forget to use quotes.

Like I said elsewhere, I had luck just dragging the dat files onto the extractor from within explorer...

There's a tiny problem with the program and here's the workaround:

Copy the TOEExtract files into the TOEE directory.
Open your DOS prompt and go to the ToEE directory.
    type toeextract toee3.dat temp\
    as opposed to
    toeextract toee3.dat temp

The second one, in my experience, gives a crash.

I posted a link to the other ToEExtract file I was using in the stickied thread. Seems it was a different one, maybe one could have luck where the other didn't?

This was the problem. Thanks much for all the suggestions. Dragging and dropping works ok too, but I guess I'm to old fashoned. :)

Anyway, got it to toss out all the files like it just had 10 shots of tequila. I plan to start goofing with fixing "Craft Wonderous Item" as that's the most annoying bug I've had to deal with.

Go ahead and e-mail any ToEExtract bugs you can find (and preferably reproduce) to zane@supernova.org and I'll fix 'em up. Most of the code is from Arcanun and was a bit, um, fragile. :p

What does it mean when the ToeExtract program makes a whole heap of directories called (NULL)? Does this with both versions that are linked to using command-line and drag-n-drop..

Is this likely caused by the fact that I'm using the demo multimedia files?

It only happens with the module toee.dat and toee1.dat, all the others are extracted fine...

I believe the (NULL) directory indicates it's in the root of whatever directory... in this case, \data for toee1.dat, toee2.dat, toee3.dat. The ToEE.dat's root is \modules\toee\

This is more of what i'm talking about, it doesn't actually extract anything, it just makes 27 or so (NULL) folders within each other...

Can you please post exactly how you ran it and white file you ran it on? If I can't reproduce it I can't fix it.

I ran the file ToEE1.dat ( 173,199,361 bytes ) through the ToEExtract.exe program by dragging and dropping it onto the program the same was as I had done with Tig.dat, ToEE2.dat and ToEE3.dat...

I also ran the file ToEE.dat (276,877,313 bytes ) from the \modules directory, by dragging and dropping, this resulted in the same problem.

My system is WindowsXP Pro SP-1..

I am currently only playing around with the files in the time-locked demo and the multimedia add-on for that demo that's meant to be for registered owners.

BTW, did you download my update from last night and try (posted about 1:00am)? Regardless, your files are a different size than the retail files, so I don't think I can reproduce your problem.

I'm planning a rewrite anyway, got sidetracked today though. I'll try and have it done tomorrow.

I kinda had a feeling that it might be TryMedia playing with things.. I'll just fiddle with what I can see now and leave the rest till I have a retail copy..
