Hi, my party has defeated most of the "Moathouse Respawn", triggered Hickory Branch appearance, and tried to start "Arena of Heroes" (my other new post covers that experience).

I also have obviously talked to Kent to get the "Moathouse Respawn", and i have defeated the Witch and most of her minions. I have penetrated the Temple to the 3rd floor, and initiated quests with the Fire Temple...

All of these should bring me to the story state where Verb becomes available ... according to the other resources on here, but i can't get Brother Smyth to mention it ... any ideas?

Let me know if need to provide more details. Playing 5.9.3 NC, and seem to be "stuck", thanks!

I'm not sure how you got access to the Moathouse Respawn without talking to the master of the arena (Arena of Heroes - you get to him by opening Brother Smyth's chest and reading the book) first. You shouldn't be able to.

Hi Geaer. Yeah, i'm sorry - i have done everything neccesary, pretty much in order to get to where Brother Smyth should mention Verb.

    I have in this order:
    1. Created NG party, did some Hommlett quests
    2. Defeated new content in welkwood, party advanced to lvl2 approx
    3. Emridy Meadows to get the contents of Rainbow Rock, and kill the Giant
    4. Conquered Lareth and Co. (liked the new mod where he joins!) lvl 4 approx
    5. Triggered assassin encounter selling Lareth's gear
    6. Went to Nulb, triggered face-off with Rannos/Gremag in Hommlett, killed Rannos
    7. Mona (orb quest), Preston (bought the shack), Tolub brawl, Skole betrayal
    8. Wiped out the denizens of the Waterside Hostel, after intiating the Triple Cross
    9. Got Brother Smyth to mention "Arena of Heroes" after unlocking the chest, warped there through book, and then declined the Arena master's challenge for the time being...
    10. Went back to Nulb, fought Rannos and Co. (TOUGH fight, several reboots LOL)
    11. Went to Temple of Elemental Evil, for a mini tour of the 1st 2 floors, a few fights
    12. Talked to Brother Smyth and Kent, got "Moathouse Respawned"
    13. Fought through most of new Moathouse crew, defeated Witch
    14. Penetrated Temple to 3rd floor, took quest with Allrem of Fire Temple

So ... Kent keeps asking his silly questions when i try to talk to him, and the only response i can choose is something like "I can't talk to you now". Brother Smyth has nothing new. My party is about lvl 6. i'd like to go to Verb, and as far as i can tell, i think all the requirements have been met!

    Do you need anymore info???

Please open the console (SHIFT ~) and type the following:

    Code:
    game.story_state
Press enter. What number does it say?

    Then type:

    Code:
    game.global_vars[972]
Press enter. What number does it say?

    Then type:

    Code:
    game.global_vars[973]
Press enter. What number does it say?

Actually, on my Vista OS computer the tilde(~) does not register as a key command when running TOEE, so i cannot get the console to function hitting SHIFT & ~ ...

    Sucks.

I could try to transfer the saves to my Win 2000 laptop, which i know does run the game, and allows for the use of the console.

i commented in the other thread about the ~ issues, where others with Vista and Win 7 are having some difficulties opening the console...

Heck, if i had the use of the console i would probably just input the value for Verb and go there. I am just wondering if i somehow have stumbled on the 1 in a million chance that i did something that broke the string of story states to unlock the new content...

do i need to COMPLETE Arena of Heroes, Hickory Branch, and the Moathouse Respawned first? Do i need to actually complete a Temple quest?

I have the issue where "Arena of Heroes" stops after the first wave - maybe that has something to do with it? ...???

Kent and Brother smyth still have nothing to say, i tried last night again, after fighting the Drow battle.

Thanks for the help though Gaear. let me know if you have any other ideas for troubleshooting, or if i can furnish any files or other info. thanks!

Can you make the ~ key a hotkey? Does it register as a value then?

Nope, it does register that the key exists - if you try to make it a hotkey it gives some kind of dialogue that the key is already occupied for use. however, like others here the console just won't open... and i know how to open since i can do it on my XP and Win 2000 machines. any variation of the shift and ~, however i press it in, hold it, whatever just leads to ... nothing happening.

My main concern though, is that the story states seem to have been met, but the convo is not triggering... *sigh*

I guess with modpack 6 in imminent release end of December, i could just wait ...???

Maybe the New content could be initiated by something more "simple", like a party level variable - Brother Smyth does not let you know about anything u can't handle by not mentioning new areas as available until members of the party have achieved a certain level.

??? certainly not meaning to cause more work - i am probably way in the minority here ... just thinking it might be another way to script it if there are others with this issue?

Verbobonc sounds awesome, and i am very much looking forward to seeing it as a living vibrant city - have only seen the "ghost town" version from before, with no one in town.

It's really not possible to break the story state progression, as that's all firmly in place via vanilla content and the NC does not determine it whatsoever.

    No.

    No.

Kent is done talking. The only thing he unlocks for you is the Moathouse Respawn. Once you've got that, Kent has nothing more to offer as far as NC is concerned.

The way it is now is about as simple as it gets and is how most quests and game progression are arranged (via flags and variables, etc.)

The only time Brother Smyth should have nothing to offer for NC is if you haven't satisfied the requirements for whatever point you're at, or if you've already satisfied all the requirements - e.g., if he already told you about Verbobonc, he won't tell you again, and being as there's no NC after Verbobonc he never will have anything more to add. Are you sure you didn't talk to him already and get Verbobonc listed on your world map? It doesn't appear on the map itself, only on the list to the right of the map.

Thanks Gaear. Yeah, i just don't know how to progress ... Is is possible to miss Brother Smyth mentioning Verbobonc? Because it is not on the list... :(

i have a lot of saves, so i could back up to an earlier state and try to see if i could redo and trigger the Verb response, by re-doing the various quests...

not looking forward to that idea though. might as well wait for ver 6 and start over fresh!

MAYBE when i talked to Allrem, and accepted his quest to recruit Oohlgrist, that does not somehow count as "learning about the Temple factions" - and if so ... what should i do that would? Do i need to talk to multiple clerics of the Temple? Please advise ...

It looks to me like it would be virtually impossible, as story state 5 is triggered on nearly every one of Alrrem's opening lines.

Not much else we can do for you without the console's help, sorry.

    [edit]

For what it's worth, I just test-ran through the entire routine again and everything worked as it should. I also searched for rogue triggers of the pertinent variables (e.g. you get the 'I talked to Smyth about Verbobonc' variable set some way other than actually talking to him) and there are none. The only way story state 5 ever gets triggered is through dialog with Romag, Alrrem, Kelno, Belsornig, Feldrin, Wonnilon, or Hedrack, or by reading Romag's diary.

Hi Gaear, just wanted to report some new findings, related to this previous post. I have been playing the Co8 6.0.0 NC modpack, and have reached the same point as before, with a similar NG party where i had unlocked or defeated the various "new content" quests initiated by speaking to Brother Smyth, up to the last that opens up Verbobonc, but STILL could not get him to mention it even after i had entered the temple and taken quests with the Fire Temple priest Allrem, or the Earth Temple priest Romag. So i got to thinking....

Perhaps an IMPORTANT point - i accessed both of these meetings in the temple through the guard at the rear entrance gate. Where, the lone dude says " gotta blindfold ye, and take ye down..." lol With my newfound access to the console, i was finally able to use your code input to test the story states, "game.story_state" yielded a result of 4 no matter what convo option(s) i selected in speaking to either Temple high priest. I could take a quest from them, refuse them, attack and kill them, etc. All attempts when i checked the story state, still showed "4". This leads me to believe that possibly the means of getting to them, through the introduction of Wat or Rentsch to the lone guard outside, somehow bugs the advancement of the story state.

The good news!!! After all this testing, on one of my saves - after accepting the quests from Allrem, and speaking to several of the Fire faction temple denizens, with no change in story state - i decided maybe if i spoke to Kelno or Belsornig the story state might change, as i was not "warped" to them by the method i already described. Maybe something was different scripting wise from APPROACHING by normal means either of these two encounters, in lieu of the Nulb "shortcut" of being "new recruits". As soon as i spoke to Kelno, the story state changed to "5". I had my crafty bard/barbarian alter ego Jallan UlDragos sneak in past the enhanced Air Temple guards, and initiate a convo with Kelno, and accept a quest for the Air Temple. DONE!!

So i believe something odd must happen when you allow yourself to be blindfolded and led down, that does not allow the story state to advance as it should. At least, that is what it appears... Hope this helps!

Now, since i have FINALLY achieved story state 5 i am heading right back to Brother Smyth in anticipation of traveling to Verbobonc for the first time. :) AWESOME

    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the report. I'll look into it, but I strongly doubt that there are different dialog nodes for recruits that don't contain story state modifiers. Still, it is supicious ...

Ha, turns out you were right with the recruiting thing. Fixed, and I also added some bulletproofing for when you talk to the priests on alert ... shouldn't be an issue by then but you never know. Good detective work, JU.
