    Issue with cookies/ spyware

    Hi all

My CO8 game just won't run on my girfriend's computer, and it used to run perfectly.

After extensive research on this forum and others, I surmise the culprits are some bloody cookies and after installing Spybot, there's a hundred of them critters alright.

But the catch is: the girl has a casino software installed that will NOT work if cookies are removed. So I won't remove them, not under her Windows session anyway. :bored:

So my question is: is there anything I can do about those cookies, maybe by erasing them under my own profile in windows?

    Thanks!

I don't think cookies are your problem (they just help track your surfing habits), but spyware/adware might indeed be clogging up your system. If your gf can't live without her casino crap, then don't remove the adware associated with it (with Spybot Search & Destroy, you can select the ones you want to delete).

When you say your "Co8 game" doesn't run, do you mean that you can't start the front-end, or is there a problem with the game itself?

Software associated with Internet web casinos tends to be like software associated with pornography websites. It tends to be heavily laced with spyware and tracking cookies, plus certain spyware keyloggers.

    [EDIT]
IMO - One thing that does NOT mix at all is spyware/viruses on a computer used for doing online banking and other financial transactions. If someone goes to pornography sites, casino "pay" sites, and other similar entertainment websites, it tempting fate to also use that same computer to do online banking and do other financial transactions.
    * This is a do-at-your-own-risk kind of thing.

Easy there, Cap'm, let's not cause a panic. I should think that anyone protected by a thorough combination of anti-virus and anti-spyware software would be reasonably secure, regardless of what websites they visit, as long as they're not doing anything stupid like logging onto phony bank sites and handing over pin codes and such.

It's a common misconception that most identity theft occurs in the fashion you describe above, but that really isn't the case.

I hope people understood that I was talking about the dangers of spyware. Spyware is more than just those pesky, annoying pop-up advertisement windows.

If someone uses a computer safely with proper active computer protection softwares, they can be safe to do a certain number of things.

    [EDIT]
This considers people using their computer smartly and they do not do dumb things with respect to using their computers.

    Thanks Morpheus

Yeah I meant spyware, after reading Krunch's bit on troubleshooting. Bummer is I don't know which ones are the ones associated with it!

The front end pops up alright, if I choose a regular TOEE it starts, but it crashes after the Troika logo whenever I choose to run Co8, whether it's 4.0 or 5.0, and whatever the options.
It used to run perfectly, and the only change I can see is this casino crap... lol.

ps: so Krunch you think I shouldn't access my bank account due to that? now that sucks, agh! :help:

Thanks Zebedee, I'll bookmark this very useful link on my computer when I'm home.

Unfortunately on my gf's computer, I can't remove the spyware as that would disable her casino-online game...

Or can I? Again, is there any chance that antispyware programs remove spyware only under a given windows user/session/ profile? I don't suppose so, but if so maybe I could run TOEEFE under a different windows session where I would destroy the spyware, while leaving it in place under my girlfriend's session...

lol, is this an original (and boring) thread or what? :)

I think you may just have to give up on the idea of playing the game with Co8 on your gf's PC to be honest. I'm not certain whether or not the user would make the slightest bit of difference to whether the spyware gets nuked or whether it stays on - it's either gone or it isn't is what I always thought. But one of the more PC literate people will probably correct me :)
You could try to persuade her that gambling is teh evil and spyware is even worse.

you could always figure out what "spyware" to ignore thats related to the casino and what is legit bullshit - had a similar problem with my online weather thing cos it had a weird name and it stoped working when I removed all the spyware on my PC but now its on my ignore list so it can stay when I get rid of all the other shit.
