I notice that most of the HD fields in protos do not have a bonus. For instance, the Gelatinous Cube in protos has an HD value of 4d10, whereas according to RAW it should be 4d10+32. Was this intentional, or was it simply something that was overlooked and is a mistake? -Mike
Check the constitution - the SRD takes it into account (a 5HD critter with a consitution of 13 will show as 5d8+5) but ToEE calculates it seperately.
Additional HP over and above the Con bonus? If you want to give more HP but not more Fort save bonus etc, I guess.
Here's a list of all NPCs that have the "extra" bonus: Juggernaut 14244 13d10+40 Shadow 14289 5d6+6 Balor Guardian 14358 20d4+80 Glabrezu Guardian 14359 12d4+48 Hezrou Guardian 14360 15d4+60 Vrock Guardian 14361 14d4+56 Lich 14471 11d12+22 ??? 14577 5d8+20 ??? 14579 10d10+30 ??? 14580 12d8+48 Skeleton Priest 14601 4d2+24 Skeleton Guard 14602 3d4+18 Tenant 14686 1d4+4 Daemon 14688 6d6+80 Saduj 14689 2d4+20 Elistaria 14690 1d4+20 Bouncer 14691 2d4+20 Bruiser 14692 2d4+20 Biffer 14693 2d4+20 Gwenno 14694 2d4+20 Great King Rat 14695 1d8+4 Chief Tenant 14696 2d4+8 Clarisse 14698 3d8+5 Frank 14699 12d4+120 Hellhound 14911 4d8+4 ??? 14970 19d12+72 ??? 14971 25d12+125 ??? 14991 16d12+48 White Dragon, Adult 14999 17d12+5 The only one I can confidently call a mistake/bug is the Hellhound. -Mike
Another question: I notice that only monsters typically have an entry for HD in protos. Is HD automatically calculated for the other NPCs based on their class levels? What about creatures that have an entry for HD _and_ also have levels in one or more classes? Does the game automatically stack them? -Mike
Yes, they are stacked, but recorded separately in protos. HD can be considered as "monster levels". The classic ToEE example is the Greater Temple Bugbear.
Some characters (first Hommlet Village Man in protos, as well as Fuga) have neither a value for HD or any levels in class. Should this be corrected? If so, how? Also, some NPCs have values for one or two saves (Will, Reflex, Fortitude) in protos, but not all three. Can I safely assume that their saves are 0 for the remainder? Finally, some creatures don't have a CR rating. Do these default to zero as well? -Mike
Hmmm. Well, the Saves thing is like the Constitution thing: the number is over-and-above the relevant attrigute bonus. So if a critter is meant to make a Will save at +2, and it has a Wisdom of 13, then it will get a '1' in the Saves column. CR is claculated according to HD and Class level, If its not enough (because the critter has challenges belying mere HD), then you get additional ranks in that column. Hence the Balor has a CR of 2 (for memory) because its real CR of 19 or so is already applied from its class levels. Everything after the Vrock Guardian were added by modders, and (speaking for myself) were added with specific bonus HP to give HP in a specific range. I didn't want 4th level fighters with <20HP, which occassionally happened in testing due to the vagaries of the Mersenne, so I gave bonus HD over and above the class level things. Other modders may have done the same or had something specific in mind. Kalshane skipped these critters when he made the protos.tab RAW-consistent out of respect to the modders (and recognising there may be reasons for it, such as what I just said).
Thanks. Many (e.g. Hellhound) creature's save stats (and HD) are copied straight out of the manual though. Whoever added them forgot to subtract the bonuses. I'll make a full list of these creatures later. Thanks for clearing this up. -Mike
