Has anyone tried playing with an NPC party?

I have been wondering if it might be possible to try a run through with one player character, and the rest of the party just NPC's. Has anybody tried this?

    Some things that might be a stumbling block so far;

    a) What character should the player character be? Naturally, a 'face' type would be the best, as I am sure the NPC's do not get involved in conversation. Perhaps a Cleric, Paladin, or Rogue?

    b) Can NPC's enchant items?

I thought this would be more interesting than the normal playthrough, and I might get a few more interesting comments, etc out of it. Thoughts?

You can play 1pc/7npc, just change the # in party in the frontend to 1/7. Npc spellcasters can craft magic just like pc's when they get to the required level. I use a cleric of Pelor with strength and sun domains with extra turning and power attack. Sun domain gives him greater turning also. The wizard Burne has no crafting skills, so take Spugnoir, he becomes a decent wizard. Serena and Riana in Nulb are rogues, but Serena is 3rd level and better. You can make a decent party and be successful but don't let the 1 pc get killed or the game ends.

In fact, the game ends if you're knocked unconscious.

Did this a long time back. The Humble NPCs option is a must if you want to be able to carry a reasonable amount of loot.

A good combo of NPCs would be Mel, Elmo, maybe Otis when he becomes available, Pishella, and Roland. Make your PC a rogue for the skills. That combo gets you a fair amount of dialog, esp. w/ Desperate Housewives.

If you get earlier to the nodes, Taki from the Air node is a pretty good archer.

If you're going for evil party, Ashrem, also in the air node is a pretty effective cleric , and you can have Turuko and Kobort join you, and have Turuko killed and Kobort still stays in the party (but watch out your alignment, they're the main quest for Lawful evil)

    Who is Roland?

I've run a similar party to what Old Book described - lot of fun :)

Solo PC is the only way I play now. There are plenty of NPC's to have what you need, casters, crafters, fighters, etc. And your PC really climbs up the levels quickly, especially if you don't have any NPC's with you.

I don't like the evil characters so i let them be cannon fodder and send a first level guy with cannon fodder to the moat house. if you have them fight the frogs, when your down to one frog, have them move to the moat house, you get one large dump of xps.

If it's timed just right you can keep one or two for later use.

I prefer kobert vs the monk, cuz kobert is nuetral vs lawful evil. he's a good fighter, though i've never taken him to the end.

Elmo is a good fighter and so is otis.

of course the best fighter is the troll king.

you need a rogue to intimidate him three times, then he joins you.

a 4rth time gets a better rate for xps.

    He's obviously evil though.

Melany is a good druid, but she's too weak to carry much stuff.

So yes: you can have just one guy hall a bunch of NPCs with him and do well.

I'd recommend a cleric or rogue be the brains. There are many fighters available.

I also like to let them join my character for a level or two, some booty and then i cut them loose.

The frontend has change a few times, but you use to be able to do 1 and 7 because i've done it before. But, then again I may have been using the pc patch counter. It's been a long time and my memory isn't so good.

I managed it with a lone Druid. Made sure I did all the Hommlet quests at first to get a few levels up before hitting the Moathouse. Then I just took it slowly making sure I had an animal or 2 with me. You advance up the levels so quickly that after a certain level it got a little easy.

    Just something I thought of:

Would an NPC rogue be able to "use" Lareths book?
