Has anyone ever noticed Jenelda?

    I was tinkering around, because after I installed the Front End and enabled the "Level NPC's like PC's" option, I was deprived of a ready referrence point to see how I should level up my followers. That lead me to open up the "Levelup.tab" file in my rules folder. In it, I found a referrence to Jenelda, the lesbian prostitute, under the entry for Bertram. The information in it read as such;

    Code:
    Jenelda	attribute_wisdom Alertness	Scribe Scroll	Spell Penetration	Improved Turning	feat spontaneous casting inflict Concentration	Spellcraft	Listen Spot	Gather Information 'Bestow Curse' class_cleric 3	'Bulls Strength' class_cleric 2	'Death Knell' class_cleric 2	'Death Ward' class_cleric 4	'Detect Good' class_cleric 1	'Dispel Good' class_cleric 5	'Doom' class_cleric 1	'Flame Strike' class_cleric 5	'Inflict Critical Wounds' class_cleric 4	'Inflict Light Wounds' domain_destruction 1	'Inflict Light Wounds' class_cleric 1	'Inflict Minor Wounds' class_cleric 0	'Inflict Moderate Wounds' class_cleric 2	'Inflict Serious Wounds' class_cleric 3	'Searing Light' class_cleric 3	'Slay Living' class_cleric 5 Cleric

    This sparked my curiousity, so just for fun, I went to the brothel and dominated Jenelda to force her to get into the party.

    ...

    I'm sure that doesn't sound right.

    Anyway, I used the console to level her up, and noticed that all of her stats were set to "10's" which I consider to be pretty unusual, even for a non-joinable NPC. Usually they have some stat variation, if for nothing else, then to make combat with the given NPC easier. From my experience DM'ing, this usually happens when a DM decides that a given NPC should never join the party. I searched Jenelda's dialog file, and only came up with this reference to joining the party;

    {180}{[sadly] Alas I am not made for adventuring. But perhaps there is some way we can be exclusive. Talk to Madam about it. She might just go for it.}{[sadly] Alas I am not made for adventuring. But perhaps there is some way we can be exclusive. Talk to Madam about it. She might just go for it.}{}{}{}{}

    No other references to joining or anything like that. I then used the console to set Jenelda's wisdom to 12. After which, she was able to be leveled up exactly like what was dictated in the levelup.tab file. All listed feats were obtainable, as far as the skills were concerned, Concentration, Spellcraft and Gather Information had no values, but Listen and Spot both had one point ascribed to them each, which was curious for an NPC that was apparently rendered to be both non-joining and non-combatant.

    Jenelda worships Norebo, had access to the spheres of Chaos, Luck and Trickery, and as a cleric of a neutral god, had the option to wield Negative Energy, just as what was dictated in the levelup.tab.

    Listed under Bertram, and all the shoes fit, is it possible she was meant to join the party?

    Nice spot. It could be that they were going to make her an NPC but with the brothel getting cut out, it wasn't implemented.

    A lesbian prostitute cleric. Certainly not a stereotype :)

    The majority of the NPCs in ToEE you're not meant to fight or have join the party have all 10's for stats. Also, just about every NPC has their skill points listed wrong. I am fixing the latter as part of my protos.tab overhaul, but I'm not bothering with the former except in special instances.

    I suppose she's something of a 'healer' (midwife?) to the girls in the brothel...taking care of the occasional injuries/diseases/consequences they might be subject to as a result of their "intercourse" with their patrons. It turned her against men.

    What needs to be done to...

    ...make Jenelda join the party? I am using Bertram's script and dialog as a point of referrence. I imagine it would require more care than just copying and pasting the dialog lines from one to another, I guess there has to be a logical progression and numerical order. Could someone please direct me?

    And I've just started experimenting with the world builder to modify Jenelda's stats. First time I've ever used it. I intend to use Calmert's stats, switching his strength values for Jenelda's charisma. Jenelda gets a charisma of 20. Explains why she got the brothel penthouse suite. I simply have to save the new protos.tab and throw it in my game, right? Thanks in advance.

    Sorry, one more question, what does the "ONF_JILTED" flag mean? There's a dialog option to tell Bertram to just "get lost", in a blunt way. I don't see this "jilted" flag being set in dialog or in script though. Think this could be set to open up some new dialog possibilities for romances? Soap opera type stuff?

    I believe Liv was responsible for expanding the lesbo-love plot here. Don't think this was original content. (Troika did love their lesbians though. Did they have lesbians in Arcanum? They were all over in VtM:Bloodlines.)

    Yeah just odd that she's a cleric though because you don't need to be a cleric to fulfill that function. One of those RPG questions about whether a character is born a certain class or becomes a certain class. Anyways, it's an interesting find. Just wondering whether it's original content or added by a modder.

    My guess'd be Troika.

    Added, then cut.

    There's no brothel in Nulb in the module. Well, not one written in by Gygax, anyway. Plenty of hovels, etc. on the map, but no ho-house.

    Or, you know, she could just like women, as most lesbians do.

    You realize Calmert was seriously pumped up by Livonya so he could defend the church against people trying to succeed at the Neutral Evil vignette quest, right?

    3 18's, 2 15's and a 20 are way too high for any normal character, let alone someone who ends up working in a whorehouse in a run-down villiage. That and no character should have a Charisma of 20 before 8th level. (18 to start and two buy-ups.)

    Of course, it's your game, do what you want with it. I'm afraid my inner rules lawyer gets uppity from time to time.

    if i remember correctly there a thing with living happily ever after with MANY characters.. regardless of your gender.. I once played through marrying 3 people... of both genders. And all their "happily ever after" came about. I think they just didnt bother programming it in.

    As for her being a midwife of sorts... a healer for the women of the brothel....

    If that was the case wouldnt she be chanelling POSITIVE Energy? She is a healer of the undead not of humans.. (well, unless she specifically prepares a heal spell...)

    My guess is that it is a mary sue of one of the developers who was cut out for "proprietry" of the game... They don't want Lesbian Prostitute Clerics of Deathdealing running around... Just like they don't want you to be able to kill a kid in the game.

    I once played through to do all the "marrage" quests. the end slides reflect the genders that you have to have to get married to the different NPCs - eg sound bites, text and images.

    that and I looked at the endslides in the dats

    Ok, Kalshane, point well taken, I'll look for a more suitable NPC to borrow stats from for Jenelda. But does anyone have an answer to my previous questions about "ONF_JILTED" and where I can find information to go about modifying Jenelda's dialog file? And just save the new protos.tab and dump it in my game folder, right?

    Please disregard the question on dialog modification. Thank's for the tutorial, ShiningTed. Still have the question about the "ONF_JILTED" flag though. Is it possible to use that flag to open up a new set of dialog options if you jilt your romantic interrest?

    Most of the games NPC flag properties are unknown (jilted being just one) and since Troika are no more, and aren't even allowed to release modding tools for ToEE, and Atari are refusing to give us the tools and related documentation, we're pretty much finding this stuff out by trial and error.

    It may not do anything, it may be an Arcanum leftover and unused (or even unsupported) in ToEE, or it may have a use that we are not aware of yet.
