Hah hah! I didn't think I would get a happy day thread being that all I contribute is my opinion. You guys are great!
Ranger rations. Those crappy-tasting, chewy food bars they issued when they didn't want C-rats taking up too much space in your rucks. LRRP is Long Range Recon Patrol. The Ranger companies of the 1st and 2nd Ranger Battalions were reflagged from the LRRP companies and platoons of the divisions and brigades from the Vietnam War. This would be in the early 70's or late 60's. A little before my time.
You are aware I retired from the the Glorious 2ND BAT 75TH Regiment, right? I have trouble remembering seeing anything referred to as LRRP, we had C-rats and then later MRE's and whatever we could acquire in the field. :dribble: But you know how it is, Rangers don't need food, just air and a purpose!
LRRP is what they were called in the 60's in Vietnam. The were retitled as Rangers and formed into the 75th Regiment, probably in the early 70's. There were no Ranger units after they were disbanded (again) after the Korean War. The 75th didn't exist either. The Long Range Recon Patrols were 6 man teams inserted way out in "Indian Country" to preform various missions. It wasn't a real good way to stay healthy, from what I understand.
Always good to hear a little history, we always deployed in company size elements made up of 5 or 6 man fire teams. We did every now and then act as part of a "Task Force", but we both know that that just allows a commander to draw from a wider assortment of assets.
In the 60's, LRRP companies were organized similarly to Rangers: 6 men to a team, 2 teams to a squad, 3 squads to a platoon, 3 platoons to a company. This is just the main structure. There were medium and heavy weapons included in the Ranger units later in the 70's, but I don't know how they were organized. I'm not sure how I learned this. So don't count on me as the final word.
