I recently got a GOG.com account, tired of the corporate DRM of steam and realizing there are many older games I never got the chance to play and I want to very much. After browsing for a few hours, I've made a wishlist of games. Being here, I thought the community would know a fair bit about these games and could give me some input on how worthwhile the games I've picked are and maybe some suggestions of other games. The big ones; Baulders Gate The Original Sage Baulders Gate 2 Complete Icewind Dale Complete Icewind Dale 2 Complete Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition Interested in; DnD: Dragonshard Legend of Grimrock (I know its new but it seems to follow all old rpg's) Age of Wonders* Age of Wonders Shadow Magic* Thief Gothic 2 Gold Edition *These two I'm especially interested in because of my all time favorite game series Heroes of Might and Magic, which it seems similar to. Tl:dr discuss some good games in the genres of strategy/rpg and maybe give suggestions.
Hey Winston, I've had a GoG acct for a long time and I'm still finding new ones to check out. You wrote; The big ones; Baulders Gate The Original Saga  Baulders Gate 2 Complete  Icewind Dale Complete  Icewind Dale 2 Complete  Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition  Interested in; DnD: Dragonshard :blank: Legend of Grimrock :blank: (I know its new but it seems to follow all old rpg's) Age of Wonders  Age of Wonders Shadow Magic  Thief Gothic 2 Gold Edition  I have these games except for Thief, it never really interested me. Dragonshard is fun, but it is not an RPG it's a slimmed down RTS with a few RPG elements. It can be fun, but don't expect to be wow'd. Legend of Grimrock is OK IMO, but it focuses more on puzzles than adventuring, (deadly puzzles). All of the Age Of Wonders are simply wonders and a must have turn based strategy, IMO of course. Gothic2 is another OK third person action game with RPG elements that was good for it's time but will never be a classic IMO.
planescape torment, any of the gold box SSI's (specially the eye of the beholder series), realms of arkania's, the geneforge sagas, darklands,
Fallout is GREAT! All the games silo25 mentioned are well worth checking out also. If you haven't gotten the Baldurs Gate Enhanced Edition yet, it's also well worth it.
What does the enhanced edition change? Where would I get it? Not on GoG, I've heard much of Neverwinter Nights 2, is that one good compared to the first?
In my opinion Neverwinter Nights 2 is much better than the first one due to the updated graphics and such. I am a weee bit partial being that most of my experience with modding is for NWN2 and there is a very large modding community with tons of excellent community made adventures, not to mention the on-line play on persistent worlds that fans have made and many have been up and running for years. If you search for NWN2 or Neverwinter Nights 2 on this forum you should find a thread where I went into much more detail about the game. It IS one of my all time favorites. NWN2 and both expansions. Also if you search BGEE in google you will find Beamdog, the folks that made BGEE and you can get it from their sire for just a few dollars.
I wonder if you export your character from a Black Pits game and import him to start a BG game, will he have the awesome gear you bought in the pits?
well you keep the gear from doing the "kill the mage" xp gain at the starting inn in candle keep so probably yes
Just tried it and I started BGEE with a level 8 fighter decked out in some pretty uber gear. I don't think the game would be anything but boring with this tank, but I was curious.
Tin Soldiers: julius Caesar and Tin Soldiers: Alexandre the Great are nice turn based strategy games. Also, Close Combat: Invasion Normandy (genarally the close Combat series) was very good. If I am not mistaken, the US military was using Close Combat as a simulation (?).
