Whats the difference between front-end 3.8 and 4.0? I have 3.8 installed. Do I just install 4.0 over 3.8? Or I have to re-install the game again? I'm not that far in the game I havent finished any quest yet, do I have to make my characters all over again with the front-end 4.0?
You can seamlessly install version 4.0 over whatever previous version you had. The new version fixes some problems with 3.8 and adds some new features. Speaking of compatibility, it's quite early to speak about KotB, but KotB is sure to come packed with its own version of the Front-End, codenamed KotBFE. It will be based on 4.xx series of the front-end, though. You should not experience any problems with your characters or saved games because the front-end does not alter the game engine mechanics. Note that version 4.0 (as well as any newer releases to come) requires .NET Framework 2.0 to operate, as opposed to .NET 1.1 for earlier editions. - Agetian
