We all know them. We all love them. What are your favorite battles during the game? For me there are really only 4 battles that truly stand out. 1) Hedrack and company. Lots of bad guys, neat armor at the end and a decent chance of spanking up on an evil god. It doesn't get much better than that. 2) The Tower. Lots of bad guys and mayhem aplenty. 3) The Assassins. Surprise! Close quarter combat with some tough hombres. 4) Giant with Bear. Very tough battle for that early in the game and nice loot. The common factor is difficulty. Nobody remembers the 3 pirates they whipped on their way to Nulb, but we all remember the really difficult battles. The ones where walking in and throwing a couple of fireballs DIDN'T finish the fight and where planning and execution (and a little luck) was needed just to be able to walk away afterwards. nf unch:
Well once when I decided to sleep in the excape tunnel and was woken up by half a dozen trolls, that was fun, especially as none of my party could fire or acid them, so every time I came back until I hired Burne...
1. Hedrack and Iuz 2. Zuggtomoy 3. Smigal and the dude in the room beside them at the same time. 4. Balor(When ha summons the other node monsters. 5. Juggernaught.
My favourite was fighting 3 young adult white dragons (built them myself <I'm so proud>, tough little blighters though).
I always like the fight on the lower right corner of the 4th level, where there's just a ton of bugbears and ogres who'll all rush you at once. Some of the buggies seem to have some rogue levels to tumble past you and then do improved trip on your wizard, but I don't like it for the challenge so much as just the whole atmosphere. I love the big chamber with alcoves hiding who-knows-what. By the time it's over there's bodies everywhere. Fun stuff. Solo monk with unarmed strikes against the werewolves was fun too!
Allyx, could you post your dragon mod? I've hunted through all the relevant threads that I could find, and you describe it in a few places, but I've never seen a COMPLETE description on how to mod them anywhere.
I like the battles where you fight groups of individuals. Liv's revenge battle is the only such fight in the game that I can think of. Hint to modders: make new fights vs. well balanced gangs like she did. 10 anonymous bugbears and 5 anonymous gnolls isn't that great for me. Baldur's gate was good for that sort of thing.
i don't know. I think a group of dragons would be chalinging and kool. The whole revenge battle was good
I agree with Gaear. The bet fights are the ones where you face a gang of mixed characters with some personality, and who are themselves using smart tatics. Just a personal list, in the order I usually hit them: 1) The moathouse fight with the barbarian. It can be a pushover of a fight with some partys, but I like the fact that the Barb isa real danger to 1st and 2nd level characters (I've seen him deal 40+ damage in one hit). 2) The last moathouse fight before Lareth. It could use some spellcasters, but I like the mix of melee and ranged foes. 3) Livonia's Traders. Dead easy fight, but the dialog is excellent, and fits right into the game. 4) Livonias version of the Tower. Incredible improvement. Really challenging, but you never feel like the DM is cheating. 5) Livonia's Assassins. Near perfect fight against a powerful group, all of whom are memorable. 6) The high priest / Iuz fight. One of the best fights in the original game, with multiple spellcasters and a nice range of foes.
No one mentioned fighting Lareth & company. To me, this is the first real battle in which the forces of good are pitted against the forces of evil on a large scale, not counting gnolls & bugbears. What I like about it is the fact that the party meets organized defenders fighting for their lives in a no-holds-barred melee. The very stuff from which adventures are made. The AI could be (and may have already been...?) improved a little, but it's gotta be among the top 5 in the game.
As I said above, I agree that it's a great fight. Only real problem is that they have no spellcaster support, and that Lareth doesn't notice you killing off his troops.
