    First of all i will take this chance to congratulate and want to say thank you to the CO8-Team and its community. Noone can express and pay as much as u have done for us (the players) and the game. I'm so amazed but also luckily surprised to still meet a community which shows a high interest in this game and enjoy the developments of this game. I would have never expected to see such an active community of a game which is from 2003 and so fullfilled with bugs and errors. Cause of your work u made the game playfull and enjoyfull for us.
    I could expend my words of praise here but i think anyone can't imagine how many hours you guys have spend in developing this game without getting paid that we should be glad that u (CO8-Team) have shared your improvements with us (the gamers). So i will end here with mý laudatory words u have well-deserved.

    Regarding my Thread-Topic i have a question to everyone who can help me:
    I think u have experienced the limit on the ToEE game engine; a maximum of just 48 portraits can be displayed in the character generation window. Is it manageable to expend this maximum? I want to enjoy all Custom-Portraits the members of the www.sorcerers.net page have uploaded and spend their time in creating a portrait.mes. For me as a "total-noob" in programming and creating specifications for example fixing bugs it could be hard to manage this. But if u know a way and can explain it, i will do my best.

    Best Regards
    David

    Sorry dude. I'm not a programmer for the Circle of 8, but the game was hard wired with a limit of portraits. To add a portrait means you have to delete another one, or something like that.

    Maybe the new beta has extended that limit.

    Though there are several portrait download packs were you can load/make a customized portrait. I've yet to see anyone make Beavis, Butthead or Homer Simpson for the ready made packs. That'd be kewl to have the appropriate sound effects for those characters.

    I used to love playing quake 2 just so i could load the Beavis and Butthead pack.

    heh heh

    The latest 5.5.0 mod has a lot of new portraits , so install it and check it out. To use the Royo and IWD pics, if you have them downloaded, you have to delete and replace an exsisting portrait. Copy and paste the pic to the portraits folder. There should be a big, mini, small, small grey, and mini grey for each one. Scroll thru portaits.mes and select the one you want to replace.
    Example: Fruella is 7280 and I put in Royo04 from the Steelwraith collection. The entry in portraits.mes should look like this:
    {7280} {}
    {7281} {Royo04_MINI.tga}
    {7282} {Royo04_SMALL.tga}
    {7283} {Royo04_SMALL_GREY.tga}
    {7284} {Royo04_MINI_GREY.tga}
    For a pc the first entry would be {XXXX} {BadDude_BIG.tga} for the one you select. The entry in portraits.mes must match exactly the the name and format the pic is in. Royo and IWD differ as do BG. Scroll thru portaits.mes and check it out. Don't make any typo mistakes and Save before you change anything. Good Luck.

    Thank you for your prompt answers, but the process wizgeorge mentioned is exactly the one i want to avoid. I know how to edit the protraits.mes. It is perfectly explained in the readme files by the customized portrait uploaders. But i want to find a way to expend this limit so i can use ALL portraits at the SAME time. So i could choose the best portrait for my created character. It is also a good feeling to have all of them included in the game :)

    So i hope someone may can help me how to manage this if it is possible.

    The latest Co8 mod expands the number of portraits for PCs to 84. In order to replace any or all of them, you have to use the method wizgeorge outlined. There is no other way, and you can't go beyond 84.

    Thank you very much for this important hint. But which version do u mean ?
    Circle_of_Eight_Mod_Pack_5.0.0_Final
    or
    Circle of Eight Modpack 5.5.0

    And could u try to explain why we cant go beyond 84 portraits ? But at the end i'm thankfull for the expansion from 48 to 84 :)

    Co8 5.5 Beta is the newest version of the Co8 modpack, with the expansion of the character portraits to 84 with all new artwork by modders.

    Co8 5.0.0 Final used the Character Voice and Portrait Pack, which effectively expanded the portrait limit well above 84, but the interface was kind of klunky at times, and the portrait packs used pics taken from outside artists' copyrighted works - so Co8 opted to remove them to prevent possible future legal issues, as well as to stay within the ToEE exclusive theme. The portrait & voice pack from 5.0 is now considered obsolete and is no longer supported on this board.

    5.5 is higher than 5.0 ;)

    We can't go above 84 because the portraits are full. We have now used every possible portrait slot we can: adding more causes CTDs. We could increase the number of PCs, but as mentioned above, that would mean we would have to scrap one of the NPCs for each one.

    You can, if you choose. Co8 5.5 is self-contained and does not need the previous versions to work.

    Unfortunately no. Morpheus did that translation work, and he's not much around anymore.

    If I understand the question, no. Adding additional portraits (what you're calling "expending the character generation window") requires our altered .dll from version 5.5.
