One really REALLY annoying feature of the combat system is that it automatically terminates combat at inappropriate times. Like if enemies are all alseep/unconscious. So you FINALLY knocked the troll down to negative HPs and it falls down... great, combat ends before you coup degrace him, now you have to rush and do it before he heals back up into consciousness, which is extra annoying with multiple opponents. I was wondering if this is possible to mod. Also, is it possible to make XP properly calculate the fact that the enemy is a party. 3 trolls together are FAR FAR FAR more dangerous then 3 trolls fought one after another. The DMG recognizes this, but the game does not. (which caused my death more then once)
Actually, the DMG does not recognize multiple opponents as being worth more than single. All XP awards in the DMG are based on CR. The bits on Encounter Level are only for determining what's appropriate for a party of a certain level to fight. It has no effect on XP awared.
oh ok... but regardless, it STILL should not end combat... just the other day I was fighting 4 trolls. I nearly DIED, and then combat ends with them all merely unconscious and i have to race to coup de grace them before they get up and tear me to peices.
I agree, its a pain, especially in a random widlerness encounter when everyone is standing on top of everyone else, trying to kwikly select them and knife them can be frustrating.
The easiest thing to do is hit c to enter combat, then you have all the time in the world to see which party member is close enough to coup de grace the unconscious/held enemy.
hit C... and you find which is closest, but they CANNOT coup de grace them unless they are right on top of them, as its a full round action. so you walk there, end turn, it terminates combat. You hit C again, but now since you were standing practically on an enemy the combat engine OFTEN displaces you, sometimes it doesnt, but often it does. (and that displacement often puts you out of range for coup de grace) My point is, its tedious. It also causes unnecessary death. I once had a 3rd level party surprised by some trolls. I barely took them down, only for me to get stuck with trying to coup de grace them so long then one got back up and it ended in TPK (i think he got like 5+ turns worth of regeneration undisturbed). I had to reload. Ofcourse, that is extreme and doesn't happen often, usually its just REALLY annoying. While I appreciate the advice on how to get around it, I already KNOW it, I have finished the game after all. Do you actually have a reason AGAINST the idea though?
I have never really had a problem with it myself, If you feel you are able to change this in the game go right ahead, I never said I wanted to stop you from modding. As for trolls, try charge attacking them, unlike sleeping enemies they wont wake up, and you'll be in position to coup de grace them.
and i never said i can mod it. If I could mod, I will never, EVER ask permission to mod my personal copy. If I suggested something, its because I am suggesting it as a part of the official mods. The idea was to convince liv or some of the other active modders that this will be a good idea, and to have them include it in the next version.
