This thread lists fixes for common problems that have proven solutions. [edit - 24/11/2010] Most of the show-stoppers formerly documented here are now covered in the Circle of Eight Modpack Explained thread, but you may still wish to post community solutions and workarounds for various bugs here. Thread unstickied and un-rules-ified; obsolete posts deleted.
#1. The Logbook Bug Symptom: New quests are not added to your logbook, nor are quests marked as completed or failed. Solution: Check to ensure that an NPC is not the character in the furthermost position to the left on the character portrait 'bar' on the bottom of your screen. To move the NPC, left-click and drag to swap it with a PC.
#2. The Secret Doors and Stairs Bug Symptom: You can no longer access different areas of the map via the use of the stair and door icons, and/or you can no longer locate secret doors and stairs. Solution: You must delete all saved game files and start a new game. At the moment there is no other solution for this problem.
#5. Game Lag Symptom: The games lags severely, mainly in the Nodes and the Fire Temple. Solution: There is no comprehensive solution, but the following measures may help to some degree: don't move the screen (ie push the mouse to the edge of screen to make it scroll) when the characters are in motion. go to Game Options during play and turn down all of your graphics settings. Uncheck ALL of the optional settings and turn down ALL sliders to the left-most setting. You can leave the graphics resolution alone as it doesn't seem to affect the problem at all. follow the advice on optimising your system for gaming given by Krunch in this thread (post number 36 and onwards): http://www.co8.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2443&page=2.
#6. Patching Issues Symptom: I can't apply patch 2 overtop my pre-patched direct to drive or jewel case version of ToEE. (This may be indicated by the "cannot locate ToEE (ANY) on your computer" error.) Solution: Here's how to do it manually: Make a backup copy of TOEE.exe (in game folder). Open Windows registry editor (start > run... > regedit). Browse to Code: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Uninstall Create new key, called Code: {AD80F06B-0F21-4EEE-934D-BEF0D21E6383} Inside it, create new string value, named Code: InstallLocation and modify it with the full path to the game install. Also create new string value, named Code: InstallLanguage and modify it with value 9 Run Patch2 setup. It should install the patch. Go to game folder and replace toee.exe with the one you've backed up (keeping the old toee.exe is essential, because it has the copyprotection of downloadable version - upon runtime it decrypts some *.dat files, which are otherwise unusable. TOEE.exe of the CD version and the official patches for it (and the no-CD hacks for those) doesn't have such protection so you can't use them). (info provided by Drifter.)
#8. Slow Mouse Symptom: While playing ToEE, my mouse is slow and unresponsive. Solution: Logitech has a mouse driver that works better with ToEE. Go to http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/14228 Download Logitech Mouseware version 9.79 Install the drivers. (If you're using a Microsoft mouse, the Logitech drivers will still work for it.) Deselect "Disable acceleration in games" in the Motion tab of Mouse Properties on your taskbar. This should improve your mouse performance, although it's still not perfect.
#9. The Spell Permanency Bug Symptom: A spell was cast on the party or a member of the party, and the effects have become permanent. Solution: Go visit Jaroo and ask him about resurrections. He will fix the problem for you for free.
#10. The Answering Swords Bug Symptom: I have a character wielding either Scather or Fragarach. After I hit an enemy with it, the game hangs. This typically happens in the Fire Node or the Fire Temple. Solution: This issue has to do with the attack of opportunity (AoO) that Scather and Fragarach award you when an enemy damages you. Many enemies in the Fire Node, for example, inflict fire damage to a character when a charater hits them. If you are wielding Scather or Fragarach, the game tries (and fails) to award you an attack of opportunity when you hit these creatures because of the incidental fire damage they cause. This in turn causes the game to freeze on that character's turn. This bug can cause problems in other locations as well. The obvious workaround is to just not use Scather or Fragarach in sensitive areas such as the Fire Node, but there is one other makeshift way around the problem: Make sure the character weilding Scather or Fragarach has a potion or scroll in their inventory. Once the character has executed his attack, click on the end turn button. Open the character's inventory and attempt to use a potion or scroll from there. You'll get a message saying the character can't use that item. Close the inventory screen. Combat will resume with the next participant in the initiative queue.
#11. Trouble Assigning Skill Points Symptom: During the 'skills' portion of character creation, I find that I've got more skill points than I can assign to the available skills. Solution: Note the scrollbar along the right-side border of the skills list. There are many more skills than are visible at the outset; you can get to them by scrolling down.
#12. Video Playback Issues Symptom: The game CTDs when trying to play back in-game videos, or the game displays only a black screen while in-game videos are playing. Game may also CTD after a black-screen video finishes playing. Most likely to become apparent at the start of a game after the opening shopmap, when you're sent on your way and an opening vignette movie is supposed to play. Solution: The problem may lie in your video card's anti-aliasing settings. Be sure to set your video card's anti-aliasing to "Application Controlled." Overriding this setting may cause the CTD on some systems. or Solution: You may need to set your video card to 'no scaling' for video playback. This will make in-game videos play in their original resolution.
#13. The Empty Blue Circle Bug Symptom: I have resurrected a dead NPC, but now the NPC appears to be invisible. The NPC's portrait remains on the bottom of the screen, but in-game the NPC is just an empty blue circle, and I can't interact with it in any way. The invisible NPC still gains experience and levels up normally, but doesn't participate in battles. Solution: Move the NPC's portrait to the spot second from the left in the party line up at the bottom of the screen (if it's not already there). Open the console and enter Code: game.party[0].follower_remove( game.party[1]) This should remove the invisible NPC from your party. (info provided by Cerulean the Blue.)
#16. Combat Movement Bug Symptom: During combat, you press Alt Tab to switch between running applications (or to toggle between desktop and the game). When you resume combat, one or more of your characters cannot move at all during their turn when they should be able to. Solution: Just move the mouse pointer closer to the currently active character, and the mouse pointer icon should change to the movement icon (as it is supposed to be). If it does not, then just keep pressing the Alt key (you may have to press it up to 20 times) until the mouse pointer icon changes to the movement icon (as it is supposed to be). Prevention: Don't press Alt Tab during combat.
#17: Frozen in Place after Load Symptom: When you load a game, your character(s) are unable to move or do any functions. This happens when you save a game with a lot of buffs on your character. Solution: From the radial menu, select sneak/stealth. This should allow you to move the character, and after that you can stop sneaking and the game should be fine.
