For those who haven't heard of it yet:

German studio Coreplay has been working on an old-school, turn based, D&D-like fantasy RPG for a while now, and has recently gone public with it.

    http://chaos-chronicles.com/

Going by the dev journal, they draw inspiration directly from all the old CRPG classics: Goldbox games, Phantasie, Ultima, Wizardry etc. As regards the combat system, ToEE was explicitly mentioned as the game's paradigm. Some of the screenshots posted even look like they were taken straight out of the Moathouse or the Temple (though you can't see any UI yet). Not to mention a screenshot from ToEE with the Co8 mod on their dev blog. In short, they definitely hit all the right notes so far.

I do have one reservation, however. You may have heard of a previous game of theirs - Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. Though I haven't played it myself, it is notorious for some questionable design decisions (in particular - RTwP combat, in a franchise known for its TB combat, and initially, lack of fog of war). So who knows how it will turn out - words are cheap after all. Those concerns are somewhat assuaged by one of the devs' posts on RPGCodex; he explains that it was due to the project being contract work subject to the publisher's demands.

At this point I'm neither an apologist nor an antagonist - for now I regard it with cautious optimisim. If they do deliver, however, then I really want them to make it big and be able to continue making those kind of games.

In short, I'd say it's definitely worth keeping an eye on, and if it turns out good, let all your friends know about it!

edit3: barring some colossal fuckup, we have a winner here...

Just to let you know, I have played JABIA quite a bit and the expansion recently released.

I wouldn't fear the lack of FoW that much, what they did is offer you an easy setting that, (like you said) has no FoW and you can see the bad guys no matter how far away they are.

JABIA also offers a normal mode where you can see the map, but not the bad guys. I prefer this option myself because if one of your team has a good listen or perception skill they can hear the bad guys and you get a dot that tells you where the sound may have come from, (accuracy is based on skill level).

After the patches the game I have runs smoothly and is a lot of fun, although kind of hard sometimes.
The enemies are pretty smart and WILL flank you, or use grenades to flush you out.

Thanks for the heads up and I'm still playing the last game you recommended, KoTC.

Some of the concept art looks kind of Chris Glenn-like.

Some delicious new screenshots have been updated since I first posted about this, including a view of the combat hex grid, plus info on Group Combat feature (ToEE's simultaneous move being cited as an inspiration). The game seems to be shaping up nicely!

I can't wait for this one to come out!

Have you guys tried X-Com Enemy Unknown?

It's turn based, great graphics and a lot of fun, although it is set in the almost present time, (2015) and the fantasy is more Sci-Fi type, but still a great, deep and well thought out game.
