A thing I find patently stupid with this game (maybe these rules?) is how difficult it is for a character, particularly a wizard!!! to use scrolls in combat!! my failure rate on using magic devices is huge, yet i pump a lot of points into the skills but how many classes only go up by .5!!!!! and where is the rod of lordly might for fighters!!! that has to be a must!
Lareth's staff of striking looks exactly like the rod of lordly might, but as it changes shape into different weapons with new abilities for each type, I don't think its possable to add it to this game. Use magic device is a class skill for rogues and bards, arcane spell casters can read arcane scrolls without the skill, and divine spellcasters can do likewise with divine scrolls.
I've never had a problem getting a wizard to cast a spell off a scroll. My questions to you would be: Do you have a high enough Intelligence score to cast the spell in question? (10+level of spell) Are you wearing armor or carrying a shield? These have arcane spell failure chances that will disrupt spells. Are you casting defensively? If so, your character could be failing his concentration check. Are you getting hit when you cast the spell? Is the scroll you're trying to use an arcane spell? As you using Read Magic to identify the scroll before you use it? As Allyx said, Use Magic Device is meant for Rogues and Bards to enable them to use magical items they normally wouldn't be able to. If a skill is only going up by .5 it means it's a cross-class skill for whatever character you're buying it for. Class skills go up 1 for 1 and show up in white.
I tried casting spells that i had scribed myself, seldom worked. High int score for wizard. No armour or shield. Always max spellcraft and concentration. was usually out of melee range so seldom was disrupted. Has got me stumped.
Did you actually give points in Use Magic Device to your wizard? I wonder if maybe there's a bug in the game where the skill overrides class abilities. ETA: Also, are you choosing the scrolls from the scroll part of the radial menu or are you choosing "Use Magic Device" off the menu? If it's the latter, that might be your problem.
