Is it possible to disentegrate the Balor (or Zuggtomy)?

It seems that a spellcaster with Greater Spell Penetration, using Disintegrate would have a viable chance.

    Has anyone attempted this?

Apart from the spell resistance, there is no reason why it shouldn't work, I beleive Disintegrate works against all living creatures (unless it has been reworked without me knowledge), it does however fail against undead because the effect used is actually animate dead (thus it fails on undead), if it canget passed his SR and hit with the ranged touch you should be able to disintegrate the Balor.

Not sure how disintegrate has been implemented within the ToEE engine, but the pnp version gives a fortitude save to resist the spell.

So assuming you hit the balor, and beat its spell resistance, you still have to beat its save. In the SRD, the Balor's fortitude save is listed as +22. Assuming your spellcaster is a 13th level cleric of StCuthbert (destruction domain)(*), with maxed Wis (21, lets say 22), the spell's save DC will be 10+7+6 = 23. The Balor saves unles she roles a 1. Even if he fails his save, you'll damage him at 26d6 (26-156hp, on average something like 90hp), the Balor is listed with 290hp.

With a Clr level 18, heightened spell (making it a 9th level spell), max Wis enhancement (wis 28) the DC will only get to 28, giving the balor a rough 25% chance of failing his save.

Assuming he fails, you can dish out 36d6 damage (36-216hp), the maximum of which is still insuffcient to take out the average balor. Heck, even an empowered disintegrate (52-312hp) would have a chance of taking him out, at this level.

But if your characters are 18th level, they can probably handle the Balor through less luck-dependent means...

So overall, I think it isn't the most efficient strategy.

    _________

(*) I'm using the cleric as an example because his spell would be more powerful than the wizard/sorceror version...

@ Cujo thanks dude, I'm surprised I never saw that fix, but it appears to be an old version as the script is nearly 3 months older than the version I have which may well be in the 5.0.0 installer as standard as it's not in the CMF. Still, it's good to know that disintegrate works on undead and constructs as it should though.
