Just hacking Norton out of my system and looking for free anti-virus software. Anyone aware of any issues with AVGfree in general or any issues with ToEE in particular?
I have used AVGFree ever since I found out that Norton's was causing problems about 2 years ago. I have had no issues with it, and haven't got hit with a virus. It seems to get along with ToEE just fine. A word of warning though. When I removed Norton's, it took part of SP2 with it, and I couldn't update Windows anymore until I discovered the problem and reinstalled SP2 (the full version) a few months later.
Thanks Blue. Sorting out the aftereffects of Norton now. It seems to have taken half of Windows with it... Alcohol 120% is definitely responsible for secure-rom issues so that got nuked too. Lots of fun
Seriously? I removed that damn virus Nortons and have had hordes of PC problems that I put down to the age of my box... hmmm...
Yeah. It's taken me a long time to try and resolve the problems Norton causes when removed. Blue said that he used a program from Symantec to remove it and seems to have had far fewer issues than silly ole me who went in with a big axe and used add/remove programs. Have had to persuade my PC to reinstall SP2 which isn't much fun. Just finishing defragging my HD now so hopefully I can see whether or not it has cured my recent glitchy installs. I'm going to be so mad if it hasn't :wyatt: edit: :censored: glitchy install number 27.
I used AVG several years ago and then went to Norton. BIG MISTAKE!! I have completely flushed the boot hard drives on all 6 of my computers and reinstalled Win 2000 pro (which they still support) with AVG. Now if I could only get rid of the the BIGGEST virus on my machines - a program called WINDOWS ( or is that WINDOZE) I guess I will have to get back in programming so I can disassemble Windows down to Window$ lite and get rid of all of the unneeded crap. Maybe it just MIGHT turn into a usable program. The BIG question then is how do we get ToEE to run on linux? My last programming was done in ADA on a job for the Navy (Does that age date me?) I have also done considerable processor level programming for some of the hardware design jobs in the past. It appears that much of your programming is done in Python - is that correct? If so where do I get some info on learning it. The local trade schools and Junior (and even regular) colleges do not teach it here.
Hi Ted Since Micro$oft has stopped supporting Win 98 it is pretty useless. I used Win 98 for a long time and it was pretty stable. I like 2000 Pro because it seems to be less prone to bugs than the more "home" oriented versions. My major gripe was all of the hidden files where it stored all kinds of info on everyting you ever did on the computer. I spent many hours getting rid of the info in these files in the past. I really object to a system using valuable disk space without even telling me that they do it. I really had to do a lot of digging to find some of them. These files may have some use to someone, but certainly not to me. Disk space is really not an issue to me any more. It is now a matter of principle to me. I also much prefer to load only the programs that I will use and not clutter up the memory with things that I will not use in the particular session. Loading everything on the hard drive may have had a purpose when we were working at 4.7 Mhz, (yes I do remember the old AT) but then we didn't have Gigabytes of RAM either. I guess I spent too much time running under DOS. Thats also why I am seriously considering going to linux.
I must confess I've noticed an improved system performance since switching to AVGfree. Not keen on how it likes to run full scans every time it gets an update but that's a minor quibble. No issues with ToEE either which is nice
mine doesn't run full scans every time I update it - bout once a weekish, I think you can change that in the prefferences or options or something
