A Fallout Veteran tries his first playthrough attempt

    Hey Guys!

    First I want to thank you for the magnificent work you have done... Now I feel like trying to master ToEE!:thumbsup:

    The last DnD Rpg I played was Baldursgate 2 + Addons and as I recall ToEE is way more hardcore! So I might need some help to get started

    My questions:

    1) First thing I'd like to know whether my party is good enough for my first playthrough or if I will get frustrated soon.:poke:?

    2) I am playing on a 1680x1050 resolution... the game looks beautiful but it is hard to read the text. Is there any way to use larger fonts?

    3) Which skills should my party members focus on?

    Hi there, a couple things you might want to think about:

    Rogue: Why not go with longbow?

    Fighter: Consider taking combat expertise instead of combat reflexes. It will help you get the Whirlwind feat earlier, which is awesome with the glaive and the spell enlarge person.

    Ranger: Dual wielding is fine, but the 'best' dual wielder may be a a character with 2 levels of fighter, followed by rogue from then on. Fighter will give you a good starting base attack bonus, and rouge allows you to sneak attack. While I love rangers personally from a role playing standpoint, they dont have a lot that makes them better than fighters or rogues.

    Cleric: Aren't those two feats for wizard school spells? I could be wrong, but they look like magic schools, not divine spell schools.

    Wizard: When you specialized in evocation, which schools did you ban?

    Rouge: Well my Rouge seems to get a higher attack bonus when he uses the short bow (+6) if I equip the longbow its only +2.

    Fighter: I have read that Reflexes+ Glaive+ Enlarge is good combination to start with.

    Ranger: I'd like to have 3 magic users in my party for crafting items. Does Finesse only work with rapiers and daggers? What about longswords?

    Cleric: :shrug: :confused:

    Wizard: I choose divination and banned ecovation... or shoud I skip the specialisation at all?


    EDIT: BTW. which favored enemy makes the most sense for the Ranger? Undead?

    Weapon finesse only works with small weapons, or the weapons you choose, I forget which. I dont think rangers get to cast spells into really high levels, so you cant craft much at that time, and you should be taking offense feats instead of crafting feats for a ranger, but thats just my opinion.

    Its fine if you specialize your wizard, as long you know you cant do some spells. The limitation on spells might hurt you in the crafting department too. When you ban evocation, you ban a lot of good spells like fireball and, I think, lightning bolt. Other people will claim that they are not needed in higher levels, which is true, but for me they are essential spells for levels 5-8. On your first time around, I would not specialize. The game is hard enough to limit your spell choices before you know the game.

    Let us know what you think of the game. Its always nice to here a new comers perspective on things.

    If you were planning to melee with the cleric a lot; I would chose combat casting as a feat.

    Toad familiar gives extra HPs, which any wizard could use.

    Rogues aren't proficient with longbows so that would be a -4 non-proficiency penalty.

    So, a couple other things:

    1) No bard love? Bards are awesome, ditch that silly dual wielding ranger j/k :)

    2) Are you taking spell focus feats on your cleric solely because he is a spell caster? Or did you have some particular spells in mind that you want the DC's to go higher for? The reason I'm asking is because my clerics usually cast defensive spells, and you wont get much of a benefit from SF feats if thats how you play your cleric too. SF feats are great for offensive spells like command and hold person though. Just a thought.

    3) Who's your face guy?

    4) Wizards do get some kick-butt evocation spells like fireball. Not really sure if they have any good divination spells at all in ToEE. Might want to look into that.

    Great to to hear from you, it's always good to welcome a new player to the game and to the boards. Lets see if I can help with a few things. Seems like you have a very powerful, well balanced starting party. There's a lot of stat rerolls, but as someone who is just starting out, you want your characters to be as durable as possible (don't worry, I've been playing for years and still frequently roll stats 30 or 40 times until I'm satisfied). Now for some answers and suggestions.

    Rogue: Your halfling is only at +2 to hit with a longbow since rogues are proficient with shortbows, not longbows. If you want to get around this there are several ways -- a) use an elf rogue b) multiclass into fighter, ranger, or barbarian c)use a feat to get the weapon proficiency d)craft or purchase the bracers of archery magic item later in the game. Also, small characters have difficulty using large items, e.g. a gnome can't use a greataxe. You can get around that using some spells, but it likely isn't worth it. Appraise is a very good skill, keep several ranks in it especially at low to mid levels where gold is an issue.

    Fighter -- I'm not a fan of whirlwind attack, so I never use it. I prefer to use Great Cleave with my melee PC's. But that's just the choice of my style of play, sort of pizza vs lasanga. Whirlwind attack with a two-handed reach weapon (such as the glaive) is a very effective tactic. Try it out and see if you like it.

    Ranger -- There are several ways to play a ranger. Usually I choose a multiclass ranger - focused in another class with a couple of levels in ranger for the weapon proficiencies, save bonuses, and favored enemy feature. Sometimes I use a single class ranger focused on archery -- not necessarily as effective as an archery based fighter, but more flavorful for my gaming tastes. But it sounds like you are shooting for the type of ranger I play the least, the dual wielding melee type. But I do have a couple of suggestions. Since your ranger has a high dex, Weapon Finesse is a good choice. WF only works with light weapons, such as daggers and short swords. Longswords are technically not light weapons, try a rapier or shortsword. Multiclassing in fighter for a couple of levels would make dual wielding more effective, but be careful. Since you are playing an elf neither fighter or ranger are the preferred class, so you must keep the levels within one of each other or face an experience level penalty. As far as the best choice for favored enemy, I don't think there is a single best choice. The number and variety of enemies in TOEE makes choosing a single favored enemy to focus on difficult. There are several good ones choices for favored enemies. Playing with a party of your size, it's likely that your ranger will have the opportunity to choose up to 3 favored enemies, at 1st level, 5th, and 10th. Fav En Undead is a useful choice; you'll be facing some form of undead at almost all levels. Fav Enemy Humanoid (Human) is good at low to mid levels, especially if you wish to make use of the social skill bonuses such as intimidate. Fav Enemy (Goblin) is good throughout since you will be facing lots of goblinoids throughout, from weak goblins to powerful Greater Temple Bugbears. Fav Enemy (Giant) works well, especially if your ranger is a dwarf or gnome. Fav Enemy (Evil Outsider) is good at high levels. Try to make sure the favor enemy bonus is high (+4 or +6) if you choose powerful creatures for Fav Enemy (e.g. Giants). A suggestion --f you plan on a dual wielder, dual wield mainly against enemies you have a Fav Enemy bonus against to maximize the usage of the bonus. Also, choose the Quickdraw feat as early as possible; it allows you to change weapons in combat without using part of an action.

    Cleric -- What clerical domains did you choose?? The choice of domains can really determine how your clerical PC works best. A cleric of Pelor has several very good choices for domains, Strength, Sun, Healing, and Good. Strength is appropriate for a cleric who engages in melee frequently. Sun is a great way to enhance turing undead. Healing is a good choice for any type of cleric; it also can be very useful vs undead. The Good domain give your cleric access to some very useful spells, including one of my favorites, holy smite. As far as the feats you chose, they aren't just useful for wizards. I'd say it's more frequent to see the Spell Focus feats taken for wizards and other arcance casters, but they can be very effective for clerics as well. Of the two feats you chose, I believe Spell Focus (Conjuration) is the more useful. First, it's a prerequisite for the Augment Summoning feat, which improves any summoned creatures. Clerics make good summoners; if you want to play a summoning spellcaster, Augment Summoning is very potent. Also, Spell Foc (Conj) increases the DC to resist spells, good if you want to use healing spells vs the undead. I'm not sure how useful Spell Foc (Abjur) will be since I don't know of many clerical spells besides Sanctuary that would be affected by it. I try to take Improved Turning at 1st or 3rd levels since it makes fights with the undead so much easier.

    Wizard -- I'm not sure that Spell Foc (Divin) was a good choice since there are so few Divination spells that require a saving throw. There are numerous Divination spells out there, such as Read Magic and True Strike, but none of them require a saving throw, so I think Spell Foc (Divin) may be a waste. Also, I don't care much for specialist wizards. The specialist spell slots were very prone to bugs in previous editions of TOEE, so I quickly gave up on them. I'm not sure if this issue was fixed in the newest mod, if so playing a specialist might be worth expirementing with. I usually chose a Toad familiar for the hitpoints or a raven for the Skill Foc (Appraise) bonus.

    Have fun and I wish you success with your party. There are many ways to play and you should continue to expirement with other charactes when you have the chance. Feel free to post again if you have any questions or comments.

    Thanks a lot guys for the warm welcome and all the input!

    I think that I will reconsider some of my character choices... how important is charisma for a cleric? I recall it being quite useful against undead... if not I might consider making a Dwarf Cleric who also serves as my meat shield.

    I choose the Ranger over the Bard since I thought that my Rouge is already the Face of my party and a ranger is better at meele combat.

    My first impression of the game... it's damn beautiful. A shame they did not use this engine for arcanum.

    Hey Guys!

    Wonderful game so far! I have got two new questions:

    1) After clearing out the Orcs at Hickory Branch I talked to brother Smythe again an he gave me a hint to talk to someone about a new quest... well I have forgotten who this person is;). To whom am I supposed to talk to?

    2) My dwarven cleric uses Lareth's Staff of Striking: After I used the Magic Weapon spell on it and buffed my Cleric with Divine Favor he was dealing 200+ Damage with each hit for some time... is this considered normal? A bug?

    Whats acutally better Lareth's Staff or a Masterwork Dwarven Axe ( maybe enchant it to +3)

    Brother Smythe either told you to talk to Kent, the child or Renton. Probably Kent.

    I think the magic weapon thing is a bug. I recall someone mentioning it in another thread, maybe Ted.

    I would just use Lareth's Staff and enchant that to +3 because it'll be cheaper. I think it's already +2 so you only need to make 1 jump.

    I have been looking for this option in the radial menu for 30 minutes... Oh well, what goes around, comes around.

    Edit: Kent as Kenter Nevets? I am not getting any new dialouge option from him.:confused:

    Kent is the little boy who you run into when first entering the village of Hommlet. He is on the southernmost path that enters the village... think of the first time you entered the village, he probably greeted you and said something about "WOW ... REAL LIVE ADVENTURERS!!!...my brothers & sisters will be so jealous" or something along those lines.

    If you start from the Inn, head south and look for a little boy on the right side of the path, before any of the houses usually... though he does walk around and could be under the trees, hidden from sight.
