First I must say that I love and respect mod creators (I always gush about you guys on forums). I love modding my rpg games, and I look for mods every time I install a game. HOWEVER, before I mod a game, I always like to play a "vanilla" version if possible. That way, I could see what changes I personally would like and better determine what mods I should install. I have recently learned that this CO8 mod offers more than just bugfixes but also significant gameplay overhauls. I understand that there was once a mod that made "co8-lite", but that was for a much older version of the co8 mod. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I would like to play a "vanilla" but fixed version of TOEE. Something like a "co8-lite" or a "co8 bugfixes-only" edition without the extra content. Is this a misguided request ? Perhaps wanting a vanilla version just doesn't apply to TOEE because of the unique circumstances surrounding this game ? After all, I understand that TOEE was an incomplete game in the first place. Perhaps TOEE is the one game where I shouldn't ask for a vanilla version since it was unfinished ? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I hope my post makes sense to other people, because I was carefully thinking about this issue lately.
Unfortunately, the vanilla ToEE experience is very difficult to run properly. It's the most wretched hive of villany and scum in the universe. Bugs are rampant throughout all aspects of the game and just is not very user friendly. Actually, now that I think about it, the co8 5.7.0 mod is vanilla ToEE and nothing really moddy about it, other than a significant experience decrease so you don't end up with a party of 12th level characters after the moathouse and it fixes all of the bugs that make the original game unplayable. I'd go with the 5.7 for a straight vanilla game, but most of the rest of us here have done it to death and are now down with the swirl.
Mod 3.0.4 with humble_npc, and maybe maxhp is the closet thing to what your looking for. You have to manually install humble and maxhp. All the downloads you need are in the forum.
George is right. See The Circle of Eight Modpack Explained for a more in-depth look at what each generation of the mod offers.
Thanks, that helps. However, if I use an older Co8 mod, won't I run into possible game breaking bugs that were fixed in the later ones? This is why I tried to emphasize that the ideal would be vanilla version that was still fixed? Is the 3.0.4 version stable enough for a trouble free run through? Also I see that in between 5.5.0 and 5.6.0, the "new content" goes down from "heavy" to moderate. Is this relatively speaking, or did you guys actually take out content when going from 5.5.0 to 5.6.0. I'm just asking because I want to make sure I'm interpreting the chart correctly.
Yes, 3.0.4 is pretty stable. I play it often. The looting works right and humble_npc improves things a lot. There's no levelcap so you can go over 10th level but there are no 6th level and above spells. You can buy masterwork stuff from BroSmyth, which isn't in vanilla. There are some strange things, like Spugnoir has 3 crafting feats at 2nd level, but there are no game stopping bugs. It actually plays pretty well.
I've been away for almost a year. i am d/l the newest 5.7 beta mod. I think before i was steared to Co8 by Atari, even the released version had major bugs. i also remember stumbling across this bug where u couldn't pick stuff up from dead guys. At first nobody believied me, that was version 3 i think? Read the original module, i think atari did a great job, just didn't follow through with marketing and bug fixing. then they deleted TOEE from their web site..sad sad.
Bummer I've been trying to install 3.0.4 but it's a LOT trickier than I thought. Can I install 3.0.4 using TFE-X v.2.2? I assume that this would not work and I'm going to need an old toee fe to install 3.0.4. However, I cannot find any links to download the old toee front ends. Also is 3.0.4 supposed to be only 1.74 MB in .rar form??? This seems awefully small.
I never used 3.0.4 so I can't tell the details, but it seems somehow doubtful to me that you could use TFX for it since it game several "generations" before even a simple front-end. You used to install the mod and then run the mod exe file or something iirc. Also, "vanilla experience" is not quite the same w/o game breaking bugs, removes much of the "difficulty" Now may I suggest TOEE vanilla v. 1.0, Ironman mode? Seriously though, 5.7.x adds minimum content which is usually game-relevant and can be easily ignored. Aside from the restored brothel and a few fixed quests, there isn't really that much addendum to the vanilla game 'cept the bug fixes since most of the new content has been temporarily "pulled out".
3.0.4 has already been packaged in a TFE-X format, which is available in the Downloads forum. And yes, the 1.74 MB size is correct. (The modpack was very small in those days.) NEVER use any front end version except TFE-X anymore, even if you can find one somewhere. Older front ends are no longer supported. 3.0.4 should be installed and activated just like like any other front end module: simply select it in TFE-X and click 'activate.'
Yes! This is what interests me, as well! Is there a way how to apply fixes of patch3 ONLY? What happens is that i get BS right after start up when running the game patched by patch3, so i cant use that!') Also, i had no idea the game was so buggy until i read all about it here on this forum! I played it about two years back with patch3 and didnt really notice anything was wrong. But U'd know better than me, i guess!') Cheers! EDIT: Oh, nevermind i fixed the problem. I replaced the toee.exe by the one with patch2 and it seems to work fine now or at least looting does')
You shouldn't install patch3 since it doesn't fix anything new but is incompatible with Co8 mod. Stick to patch2+co8 mod of your choice.
