I've run into them several times and their causual transference of lethal damage to non-lethal is quite annoying. Is there a favored way to deal with these odd and particulary difficult creatures?

Fire and acid damage is normal damage, but difficult at low levels.

I believe the usual method is to beat them unconcious, then apply the Coup de Grace from the radial menu before they recover. Once they are prone, AoO's will usually keep them down. ;)

yeah, they're vicious still, but really, all you have to do is 'kill' them normally, and then finish the job after the fight's over.

I agree- "kill" them normally, then Coup de Grace when they are still down. Don't waste time and spells trying to acidify or burn then to death.

I was wasting my spells on them! So, I think I'll try a coup de grace and save my precious few spell slots. Thanks for the suggestions, everyone.

    Hi Miller
I should point out that Trolls don't regenerate damage caused by fire or acid, so if you are confronted with a group of trolls, and your 5th level wizard goes first, by all means, lead off with a fireball.

Which reminds me of another question - don't quite remember: can't you coup de grace enemies that are "knocked out" in some other ways than being uncouscious (e.g. prone, paralyzed, etc?)

Ah, remember now. It's not for prone, but for sleeping and/or paralyzed (or held) opponents that it works. An awesome strategy in early-game.

Yes Coup de Grace works only for negative hit points enemies - or others that are paralyzed or asleep OR Unconsious (like from Color Spray) only. It is a GREAT one hit one kill option.

jtlupo- let us know how that worked for you, we know it will be a hit :)

'Helpless' is the technical term - not just dazed or webbed or stunned or denied dex, but completely incapable of stopping you ramming home the misericorde.

^ Yeah, that's the term. I was trying to remember exactly which conditions count into that.

Still, combat tactics take on a completely new colour once you learn to use spells that make opponents helpless and the ones that tie them down. With that, even a small, weak group can easily deal with overwhelming numbers - put archers to sleep, tie the fighters down, charm a strong enemy, and the job is as good as done

technically, a coup de grace requires that your weapon / spell be capable of dealing lethal damage to the target. So you should only be able to coup de grace a troll with a flaming / acid weapon or spell (yes, you can coup de grace them with a fireball).
And a coup de grace shouldn't be auto kill, its an auto CRIT (unless they are immune to crit), plut a fort save based on damage dealt to not die.

but in the game it is just "auto kill"...
Trolls are supposed to be f-ing scary... they are unkillable and can TPK you unless you have the right form of damage dealing. as it is you just knock them down and finish them off.

Well, the trolls in the game are scary enough as it is. Probably also better done than trolls in other RPGs I've played...

Also, iirc, TOEE does have the opponents make a Fortitude throw, but it always fails

The coup de grace with any weapon thing in ToEE seemed to be a replacement for the PNP tactic of dousing the unconcious troll in oil and lighting it on fire. :)

That'd be an awesome thing to implement  All you need is an oil item, and then replace Coup de Grace for Trolls with "Kill it with Fire" action.
