Northern Oak Woods: Mad Hermit and Harpys (possible SPOILER)

I encountered the mad hermit Florrin in the northern oak woods. Fascinating fella. :D
But what am I supposed to do with him? I gave him my shoes, saved him from the attackers, and all I got was the attackers' loot.

When I let those guys kill the hermit, I can loot him to get a magic ring, magic dagger and a druid hide... a lot better.

So does saving the hermit lead to a quest, reward or anything? Or can I just go ahead and grab his stuff?

Yes. An IMPORTANT quest. And you can always kill him later. ;)

    Thanks!
Is there anything to consider or do I just have to save him and get the quest later on? Because I didn't get a quest, so I loaded a savegame...

Its not important :p But yeah, much later there is a quest if he is around. If you missed it, don't sweat.

Thanks, I'll just save him then.
I have to say this module is very challenging and a lot of fun. I cleared (almost) the entire northern oak woods while on level 1 and fought some very fun battles.
I found only one (baby) harpye though. Couldn't go into the large wood part in the middle... Guess I have to look again. Or is there a secret door somewhere? I checked on some places, but didn't find one yet.

This is the place where you use the concentrated search tool in your inventory, not the normal search. The other place you use it is also outdoors.

Finding the harpys (Northern Oak Woods)

Yes, I've read the areas that can be found with the search tool are outside. So I used that tool there. I tried it on the whole left side of the unpassable woods in the middle and near the madman, but I didn't find anything yet.
I'm currently looking for the place where I slayed that harpy but I don't remember where it was. But I do remember there was a weird stone or something nearby so I guess I'll find it eventually...

Edit: Okay, I found it. Quite logical actually...

Location (highlight text to make visible):
It's were the baby harpy is, near a broken pillar (?) and a stone between some trees.

    Performing memory maintenance...
Scanning out of date logs... data found... data encrypted. Possible fatal error...
    rebooting systems...

RFS-81 is definitely one of my favourite NPCs ever. :)

One of mine too. I love it when says "Ignore" when he's attacked.

I've got a game going on my clunker machine now. I'm running the mod where he eventually gets the Pain Stick. (The one by Flame.)

Who do you like for the other npc?

    "Performing scheduled maintenance..."

Yes, and his comments on the strength of the enemies are also awesome... "Practice mode" or "Killer mode"... No, all his comments are just plain awesome. Just "Viewscreen off" when he's blinded (because he's a monk and it doesn't matter). I like his comments that much that I even started to convert his sound files for IWD (but I didn't finish it).

Unfortunately there aren't that many useful NPCs, because most of them will not go into some of the areas. But I really like Vitalia, and I also like her class - Valkyries are the better Paladins imo. :D
If your party already has enough melee fighters, you could consider taking Saxx (Bard) or Sparkle (Ranger) (if you don't mind her cuteness), but they won't go to the Rapax, T'Rang, or underwater areas. Madras the Gadgeteer is also okay I guess. The other NPCs are useless imo because their either extremely weak, won't go to most of the areas or you can only meet them at the end of the game (Sexus).

I haven't played Flamestryke's mods because they don't add new areas but just change the balance of the game - and I don't like that because Wizardry 8 is probably the most balanced game ever made.
But I tried out the DoddTheSlayer Mod, and I can recommend it. It adds some nice new areas, merchants and a crafting system. It makes the game a lot more difficult though, you'll have no choice but to run from some of the new encounters until your party is strong enough.

Don't forget how he says "Overload!" when he gets hit. ;)

In Flamestryke's mod, set the difficulty level higher. I'll have to try out DoddTheSlayer's mod. I wonder if they are compatible.

I doubt they're compatible, but you can always try. ;)

I've planned to make a small mod myself for some time now. Unfortunately the Editor never works, CTD everytime I try to create a new area. :(
But I'll just write to the author when I have the time to get started seriously.
