Playing the latest version. I can kill the balor in the fire node (though) not with out great difficulty. However, when I kill him the crash crashes to desktop. I saved it where the Balor is 15 HP and it's otis's turn. He's about to go to town with the frostbrand. He swings and I hear him connect but the game crashes.

Oooh, that's a new one! :scratchhe

Maybe it's something to do with the Fire Node in general?

I know from other posts that the fire node is notoriously laggy/buggy. This could be yet another symptom.

I had a crash to desktop a few times (and was repeatable). trying to go into the water node several times. Eventually I teleported back to Hommlet and went back and it worked. I really don't want to go through all that again ( That Balor is tough!). There's no way to cheat to kill him is there? I mean I have killed him it just crashes. Very annoying. I do have a save game if you want it for whatever reason. I don't know how to send them but I do have it.

Also I'd like for finially beat this game! I've owned in since 2003 and never beat it due to bugs.

Do not save in the nodes or during combat and never quicksave. You can count on a corrupted save and ctd's. The firenode and the Balor are very complex and have been a problem since the game came out. Be well prepared and save before you go in. Lots of luck. It's tough.

Nope didn't work. I left the place, went back to Homlet, rested some went back to the node with out any saving in the node and when I killed the monster it crashed back to desk top.

This has been known to happen, its something to do with the Balor's death aniimation where he retributively nukes his surroundings. Don't know if there is much you can do about other than to turn down ALL your graphics settings at that point, particularly particle settings etc. Some things (eg fog) don't show at all at low settings, so you can hope the crashing one won't show.

If Krunchy were still around he would tell you to update your graphics drivers, but I am gonna assume you have done that since 2003 ;)

That did work! But created a different problem. Now I can't pick up anything! It won't let me pick up the gem or interact with the door. I teleported out but I can't interact with anything in hommlet either! If it's not one thing or another. I'll try from an older saved game and see if that's just a coruption.

Sorry to hear that :( But needless to say, once he is dead, turn them all back up again. And 'can't pick up the gem' is another common bug from way back

I fixed it! I removed all my belongings and rested in the node for eight hours. After that I could pick up items and use doors. So I finially beat the game after all these years. Thanks to everyone for helping fix the myriad of bugs and stuff.

I did like the ending. Very much in style of Fallout and Arcanum. All RPGs should have endings like that.

I have seen this mentioned a number of times on the boards here, and while I'm sure it is with reason, I am going to chip in that in hundreds of saves in the nodes, and I hesitate to think of how many saves during combat, I have never once had any technical problem at all. So it can't be a universal problem, and I think the advice might lead to players having less fun with the game than they could.
I treat this like any other game - if I need to leave, I save it, in node, combat, whatever. I have not found it to be buggy in response to that approach.
I see that some people think that saving during combat is cheating of a sort, but I am not totally convinced that it is also really such a major technical problem. At any rate, this is at least one example of it not being so, for what it is worth.

Well I am glad William_2 has got away with it, but I have personally had saves corrupted due to saving in combat, and wouldn';t recommend it. Not every time - I've saved during the Balor fight myself (before switching to Scather to finish him - if you deal the death-blow during your attack you can do it before the answering bug kicks in, but its also not something I recommend) - but if something has an increased chance of causing a corrupt save (as opposed to just saving while standing around, which should not get corrupted) we actively recommend against it.

Not saving in the Nodes at all does sound a bit extremem but probably someone has had issues getting any saves to work in there at all, so I can see that :)

Only saved during the Balor fight and that was to see if the crash was repeatable. I did save right before the battle and tried out to see if that stasis spell worked on him. I forgot what it's called. But it makes it so you can't hurt anything that is the subject of the spell but they can't do anything while they are subject to it. Answer: Yes it did.

Probably my last post, but I'll add in another minor bug I had. Sometimes NPCs would attack me automatically if saw the NPCs that were in my group. They would not attack go hostile if they saw my player character but would bezerk if they saw the NPCs. Occured with the two concubines and the Balor. The Balor of course always attacks but he didn't give his little speech first. Anyway thanks again.

EDIT: I just noticed that I joined four years ago. Weird.
