Just got my hands on a machine with ubuntu which I plan to run a windows virtual window in.. I will let everyone know if the game had issues and if it ran faster, smoother, etc.. as the operating system is based off of unix and uses less resources to run :chainsaw:
It wouldn't run faster nor smoother, because You have to power linux, a virtual machine and windows, as an opposite to windows only. Then comes stability issues of virtual machine, not to mention that usually You can't use video graphic acceleration inside the virtual machine. Conclusion: good idea to not have to install windows, but not for the goals You are thinking about. If You had a native linux version of ToEE that would be a totally different story. That is the case with Neverwinther Nights.
I'm running it on a mac with native versions of crossover and cider (Wich are different ports of wine and cedega respectively) and the game runs pretty well with 1.0v patch but not with 2.0 so i can't enter some zones or get into some of the contents, if you are lucky than me please tell, because maybe taht could help me Hope to know about you soon
How odd, I've just installed Ubuntu myself and was planning to test it out and do a thread here as an alternate to having to go through yet more fun with a vista install. The reason for running the virtual windows in Ubuntu is that Ubuntu can effectively be given gigs and gigs of virtual memory and use it far more effectively than windows can use its virtual memory. It's hard to explain how wonderful it is to have old PCs running a better, faster and prettier OS than Vista or XP and doing it despite handicaps that would cripple them in a windows environment. My ubuntu actually runs virtual windows faster than when I log into windows on the very same PC Ax - if you get it up and running before me, could you teleport to the nodes and see how they are acting? My testing will probably be this weekend providing that the HD doesn't die again (maxtor problem not related to install - new HD comes Monday especially for my new OS ).
Not sure to be honest as I just told ubuntu to find me one while I was sleeping :google: Just had to reinstall, so will now check which ought to be the best. No 3d acceleration on my PC until I get this new gfx card put in later tonight. My ToEE computer currently only has a 32mb onboard graphics card so it's not the greatest Will do some more testing this weekend once I get my windows install back up and running from Home Edition to XP SP3 again. I love restarting the PC every 5 minutes edit: oh my VM software is called VMware Fusion. A friend gave me a copy because I wanted to try to run ToEE so desperately on it. :chairshot
