But that's what I mean - in the Downloads section there are loads of threads talking about them but I couldn't find anywhere to click. Do I have to trawl through all the posts to get them? I expected a Downloads button at the top or something.

    Thanks for the link...

    Cheers

Unlike many web pages and fora, many C08 links are not underlined. As you didn't specify which downloads you wanted, I'll lead you to the Co8 download pack and cumulative fixes.

    1) From the main forum page (http://www.co8.org/forum/), select the Downloads forum; it is the first sticky below the blue TOEE Modding header.

    2) Select Game Modifications -- it is the first forum under Sub-Forums in blue.

    3) There are three stick threads -- click on the last (Sticky: The Circle of Eight Mod Pack: A Step-by-Step Download Guide by Morpheus) and follow the instructions. Morpheus tells you what order to install ToEE, the officia Atari patch(es) and Co8. The link to C08 is on this page -- http://files.co8.org/mods/Circle_of_Eight_Mod_Pack_5.0.0_Final.exe. It isn't underlined, but it is a working link.

    4) After that, you can install C08 cumulative fixes -- these are incremental fixes that have not been integrated into the main patch in step 3. These fixes are located in the first of the three sticky threads -- ToEE Cumulative Mods and Fixes Patch by Gaear. The link in this thread is Cumulative Mods and Fixes v5.0.5, but like others, no underline appears until you hover your mouse over it.

Not sure what you guys are talking about re: the links. To me it looks like this (blue text and underlines a-plenty):

I think the board has several display templates, the default being what's in my attachment.

I suppose it might have seemed slick and modern not to underline links to whoever created this template. But apparently it leads to no small amount of confusion (and if one person missed the links, you can bet there are dozens of others too). I suppose we should contact Sol Invictus?

And while we're at it, is it possible to increase the size limit on the attachments a bit? I doubt the forum would implode if we could attach 400kB jpegs or 1MB rars (I already had to split my traders' mod due to this annoying restriction).

Yup, Obsidian style looks all the same, if the poster didn't take the trouble of coloring, underline, etc.

Still, i've found the sections quite clear, the first time i arrived here, went straigth to it with no problems. And now it's been cleared more...

Btw, i can see Gaear's image directly, not the clikable small icon... :scratchhe

The 'display image/or not' thing is a selectable option in your User CP.

Yeah, this would definitely be a problem. I'll see if Agetian could possibly remedy this, as Sol has been pretty well MIA for months now if not years. It would be interesting to know how many users use each different template .. might be a good poll topic in GD.

Sitra, I shall PM you access info to the Co8 FTP later, which will solve this issue for you. Maggit too for that matter (who asked decades ago from memory ;)). And HK now I think of it. Maybe even Cuchulainn, Ax Thrower ... :dizzy:

Anybody who does significant amounts of free work for Co8 should be able to put their Co8-related stuff up there.

FYI, I wasn't complaining, I was explaining. I prefer the Obsidian look, even if it makes some clicking harder. I'd recommend setting default as the one Gaear showed -- nobody should miss those links. Maybe a sticky about how to use the board, including user configurable styles for advanced users.

I'd still choose Obsidian, but that's me.

It'd probably also be helpful to start a new Sticky/Thread for Downloads. Just lock it out to administrators so the download links within don't get buried by pages of comments. I found all my downloads by opening a second browser window and Googling what I needed because I couldn't find anything on this forum. I seen several threads saying that this program or that program was in the downloads section. I looked for a downloads link all over the page. Then I tried several forum searches which just brought up every thread were the download was mentioned. I eventually went to the Google process to find what I needed. So to group all the downloads in a clearly marked thread would really help. Maybe give it it's own section so you can add subsections for specific downloads or instructions and tutorials.

    Just a thought...

@ Pentegarn, per my previous post:

There are only three threads, all sticky: Co8 main download, KotB download, and Co8 Cumulative fixes.

Maybe it's me, but I have no problem getting to those threads. Are people using the Search tool and getting just a list of threads or something?

Well, I'd say navigating this place to the downloads section isn't entirely convenient. I can see how people would get lost, and it's been my own experience that if you don't find things quickly you tend to lose patience (not talking just about this site specifically here).

I think we could use a frontpage / main website, like there used to be in the past, with news updates and maybe even some commentary. KotB alone deserves this, I would say.

Unfortunately it seems we're stuck with things the way they are. We've lobbied to have the Co8 frontpage restored to no avail. It would be ideal if we had one (I agree KotB deserves it) with a big fat download button in the middle, but absent that, a forums main page with a downloads forum listed and viewable at first glance (among 16 others, admittedly) is the best we can do.

Sorry to hear we can't get a web site per se, but last I heard them things cost money :(

Anyway, I think we could make things a bit easier with the forum. Again, I use Obsidian, so mileages may vary, but the top is something like:

May I ask why it was taken down in the first place? (or why it wasn't restored)
Well, I do vaguely recall that Sol wanted to convert it to a Hellgate London site - was that the cause? If so, since the game turned out to be crap, is there a chance we could get the page back? Or did we have a falling out with Sol and he refused to let us use the artwork? Or is it all just due a technical reason, like a server crash/lost data?

Either way, it was a beautiful looking site from what I remember. A pity.

As for the downloads - I think it wouldn't hurt to have some 'redundancy'. Perhaps put up a 'quickstart' subforum, or stickies in other subforums.
