Is this STILL a bug?

Probably Troika and the Co8 modders chose to make him conform to the pnp version as far as gear, i.e. he comes with chainmail and shield which was fine for a 1st/2nd Ed ranger, but doesn't really work well as a 3rd Ed ranger.

Would it be a good idea to make him 4th Ranger with +1/2 chain shirt? Or is it even worth it?

In the PnP module "T1-4 The Temple of Elemental Evil", Elmo is a 4th level Ranger and his brother Otis is a 10th level "Ranger Knight" which is just the old 1st ed. title for a 10th level Ranger. I'm not sure what the Atari/Troika/Co8 game has Otis' classes as. I've never taken on Otis as an NPC for level purposes. He's just too high level to take that early on, and I like a challenge.

I'm just curious as to whether there's an editor or other program out there that I can download to change the classes of some of these NPC's. If so, someone please send me a link to it. I'd like to change a couple to fit more with the original game. And some just to fit my original run through this module in my first PnP D&D/AD&D game. Our DM made a couple of changes as DM's are prone to do. One was that Wonnilon was an Illusionist/Thief instead of a Fighter/Theif due to our over abundance of the Fighters in our PnP group. I would like to make that switch in my own personal game just for nostalgic reasons. And Furnok ended up a Bard in our original game as well. Elmo, Furnok, and Wonnilon all started as NPC's in our group and later became PC's as new players joined and assumed their roles as the game progressed.

So if anyone can help me with this, I'd appreciate it.

Heya Pent, grab the protos editor from the downloads section here. It's amazingly easy to use, and with it you can change class, stats, feats, skills, levels, and even the appearance of the NPC's. Hell, you can even change what kind of treasure share they want. It's a great tool for customizing your game. :)

OMG, Thanks Greylan. I mean really, thanks. I've been wishing I could recreate my original Temple group since I got the game, and your info just made it possible. So let me say it again, Thanks.

This was all hashed out over a lengthy period of time in Co8 history, from memory, with much acrimony and bitterness. What we have now is what it will stay.

Not a problem at all man :) Once you got used to editing the protos files, you'll find the replayability of the game goes up even more. If you have any questions about how to use it, PM me or just reply here and I can give you a hand. :)

Oh yeah, make sure to back up any files you edit first! It's only happened to me once out of many many times editing, but one time I did manage to corrupt the protos.tab file, and when that happens, the game won't load. Don't let that deter ya though, like I say, it's only happened to me once out of many. :)

Whoops! Don't want to rake over old wounds. Greylan has offered an alternative, anyway.

Well, I don't know about protos tabs, modified or not, but the Elmo NPC in my Co8 ver 5.0.0 game is a Ftr 4 with FOUR feats, not six. And even though I told him to sober up he still staggers about a bit.

So where do I get these cumulative updates that fix this? or is it too late as he's already levelled up to level 6?

    Cheers

I tried editing Elmo first with the Protos.tab tool by Phalzyr (I think that was the name). But it didn't work. The other NPCs took the changes I had made. I re-checked the protos.tab file with the editor just to make sure I had saved the changes I had made with Elmo and they were saved, they just didn't carry over with that NPC. I'm guessing there's probably another file associated with Elmo that the Protos.tab doesn't fix and the World Builder does. So I tried the World Builder tool and the changes I made with Elmo worked.

Like Greylan said, being able to modify aspects of the game makes for some great replayability.

I still use the Protos.tab tool just to find the NPC I'm looking for as a search on the PC's name generally finds the PC. In the World Builder tool, some NPCs won't be found by searching the name because NPCs may be ID'd by some other heading such as in Furnok's case, which was "Innguest ###" or something like that. But if you find them in the Protos.tab Tool you can find the NPC, get the ID number, which is the first number in the line before the PC's name, and just type the number in the Protos search of the World Builder tool to find it.

I've not had any bugs or problems with the game after editing the NPC's. The editors are pretty simple if you have a good working knowledge of D&D 3.5 Rules and know how many feats, skill points, spells, etc a class should have. So it'd definately go a long way to fixing your problem as well up opening up more possibilities. Just make sure you back up your Protos.tab, Description.mes, and LongDecription.mes files before modifying and replacing them.
