I read here somewhere that a Holy Longsword +1 was available if you completed some Hommlet quests, specifically, getting Filken and Percy to make up and marry Mathilde. I have completed every Hommlet quest with this party and I cannot get this sword. I would like to ask why. Do you need to bribe, kill or wait until a certain level to get it. I find that implausible as my party is level 9, but seeing how I purposly completed every quest just to get this sword I am a little ticked off. If anyone can help explain this, I would be most gracious.

Quite simple. After you complete the Moathouse quest (make sure you kill that fool boss), and go back to town. If one of your characters has a charisma score of 16 or better, talk to Filken's daughter. You'll get to talking, and you can ask her to marry you. If you get Filken's permission, you two get married, and he gives you the family Holy Longsword +1 as a dowry.

    >>SPOILER<<

It's not a Holy sword, it's a Radiant Longsword +1. And you don't need to finish the Moathouse quest -- Melany can come along with you!! All you need to do is to woo her with a male PC with a high Charisma score (I don't know if race matters or not... I've done it with elves and humans). Pace yourself, and every time you visit Filliken during the Cupid's Arrow quest, have that character talk to Melany and stick to the scripts that sound like a fairy tale romance novel. DO NOT insult her town or her family, or you'll blow the quest!! After you resolve the Cupid's Arrow quest (Marik gets to marry Althea, Rik builds Filliken a new barn, and Filliken gets permission from Jaroo to marry Mathilde), then ask Melany to join you on your adventures and marry you. She tells you to ask her father, your high charisma PC Bluffs him into believing that you'll take good care of her, and he gives you the +1 Radiant Longsword as a wedding present. Quest resolved.

Melany is a 1st-level Druid with some truly pathetic scores. She can't even wear leather armor without becoming encumbered, so I recommend leaving her out of any sort of melee combat and don't bother with any armor. She only has a rusty dagger and some farmer's clothes, neither of which she'll drop. Get her a club (just in case anyone gets too close, and she won't try to sell it), and equip her with a sling and sling stones. If you really want her to do more, get her a longspear which she can use to poke holes in bad guys at range. Then, for the most part, have her summon an Animal Companion... the jackal, dog or wolf are the best choices at first... and stay back and cast druid spells and Summon Nature's Ally during the hard combats. If you let her get high enough in level, she'll eventually learn the really good spells, like Call Lightning (works inside the Temple, in this game), Flame Strike, and Ice Storm. She's living proof that you don't need high scores to be an effective character.
