What about FtrX/Rng4(TWF, Fav enemy, some spells, animal comp.-my favorit melee PC)? Also, Ftr/Rog(sneak attack, uncanny dodge....), Dru/Bb(very good melee caster, an alternative to the more clasic Cle/Ftr). As a caster oriented, WizX/Bd1( someone might prefere Wiz/Ftr for HP or weaponery, or Wiz/Rog for dodge/evasion, I prefere a level of bard for the Bardic songs and some complementary low level spells).

the ftr multi-classes well with everything, any character can use extra feats and a fort save boost
the pally/sorcerer have unbelieveable saves as well as being heavy artillery and ftr/rog/barb has lots of feats in addition to evasion and uncanny dodge and with a reach weapon can counter the fact he cant wear heavy armor

Start as a pure elf rouge for one level, then shift to Ranger and focus on bows for the remaining levels. The high DEX for this character doubles as party archer and SEARCH/DISABLE TRAP/OPEN LOCK specialist.

I like Elf RogX/RanX. Dual-wielding w/ sneak-attack, but it advances slowly on the rogue side. I usually do female with celtic runes, gloves of dexterity and weapon finesse feat. Good light weapons are rare though.
I suggest half-orc for the dru/barb. Can wield the double-axe.
Doesn't Pal/Sor pretty much require human or half-elf?
Of course, monk1 is good for Elf Mage. How about for druid (requires LN) w/ celtic runes and spare bracers of defense? Maybe with Amulet of Wisdom.

Fighter 6/Wizard X: Start the game strictly as a fighter when melee is more important, and then later in the game go wizard when you need the magic. By 11th level, you can hold your own in a fight and cast fireball. Great solo character.

Barbarian 1/Fighter 2/Rouge X: The classic fast moving, two-weilding, sneak attacker. Have your wizard cast Greater Invisibility and watch the show.

Rogue 1/Wizard X: The rogue level opens up your weapon options a bit and allows you to spot traps. The high intelligence for a wizard will allow you to keep putting skill points into openlock/disarm trap. Won't need another rogue in the party.

Paladin 2/Fighter X: The 2 levels of paladin will boost your saves and allow you to heal yourself a bit. Then use all the fighter feats to specialize in a weapon.

Monk 1/ Any Class X: The monk level is just there to add your wisdom bonus to your AC. Use Amulet of Wisdom and Owl's Wisdom spell to make your spellcaster untouchable.

Fighter X/Rogue X: This is the only true dual class I've found successful (except for Druid X/Barbarian X mentioned earlier). The sneak attack bonus to damage is awesome in the later levels. Give this guy Scather and flank your enemies. Fun times.

I once had a party of all elves and by like 7th level I gave all of them one level of wizard and wands of fireballs. There weren't many battles that lasted past that first round!
