Hello there, I'm brand spanking new here -- first, thanks very much for taking this effort in making this a great game! I have never played ToEE before; when looking for a patch after I bought the game, I stumbled across your site and installed the Co8 patch. This is my first run through and I have these questions: - In Homlett, where I started out, I spoke to some random citizens who just seem to be standing around waiting to dispense quests. One of them was in a farm house, looking to solve some problem with his brother, and his daughter too. But my quest book still is empty, showing only sometihng about finding the rainbow meadow treasure. Is this right? - I found an inn and hooked up with two characters who want to explore a ruined moat area. So we went off looking for that and are battling lots of bringands, so far so good. We continue to find things, however, which we cannot identify, mostly potions and scrolls. In my party, I have both a wizard and a thief; the thief can try to identify the stuff, but always fails, and the wizard doesnt even seem to have a chance to identify them; which command would do that? - I notice that puchasing an "identify" ability from an NPC costs 100gp; but using the spell is supposed to do that too; so what is the point of having the spell? - People tell my characters to put on clothes, although they are wearing clothes. Is that just for fun? - I gathered a number of items such as gloves, caps or helms, and boots, all of which seem to do absolutely nothing: neither inhibit spell-casting nor give any bonuses, either to dodge or AC or anything else. All they do is take up weight. Is there any point to these items? - In indoor map areas, it is usually a bit close and my chars often run somewhere entirely different than where I send them; any tricks here? thanks very much! -o
Welcome to ToEE! Welcome to ToEE! Welcome to ToEE! Welcome to ToEE! No. You should have some quests mentioned, even if they are only in purple to say they have been mentioned to you (even if you didn't accept them). Possibly an install issue. Since u r new here, lemme tell you, you should install: Atari Patch 1 Atari Patch 2 Co8 5.0.0 and the Cumulative Patch (CMF 5.0.4) - this is optional, it has the latest stuff. Then run the FrontEnd (if you are using it) and check the 'clear map cache' box before running your game. FrontEnd requires Microsoft .Net 2.0. If you have skipped any of these steps, you may have problems. See next problem. Yup, thats how you do it. The spell is there for times u r down in the Temple (or wherever) qnd don't want to come up to the surface to get that magic sword identified. Note that 'Read Magic' spell will identify potions and scrolls. Are you sure they have clothes on, and not just capes or cloaks over the top?
They stop people complaining you're in the nude Otherwise, no real game purpose apart from a touch of realism. Don't send your party running far away. Try smaller moves. You'll still sometimes end up with some odd pathing by party members but that's part of the joy of this game
Yes, there are many people standing around in Hommlett waiting to give out quests. For that particular quest, however, you need to find other people with the same problem to get flagged for it. That particular farmer has no problems with the situation, so he wouldn't ask you to fix anything. Basically you should adhere to the first rule of all CRPGs...talk to everyone about everything (at least the first time around).
OK thanks very much -- very helpful! Just a couple follow-up questions if I may? - I noticed by accident that I can wear armor with which I am not proficient without any penalty and with all the benefits. Is that a bug or a feature? - My AC and the AC listed in "more info" is often different; my barbarian, for instance, has a 17 AC listed in his stats, and when I click for more info, it lists it as 16 (+3 dex, +3 armor). - I notice that drinking a potion doesnt cause an AoO, but casting a spell does. Is this a feature? Still tinkering about in that "moathouse", but it is quite cute for a hack-and-slash, except that I cant open most of the chests. Killed 2 NPCs who joined, alas -- boo hoo! THanks so much for all your efforts -- great!
Well, that's strange, I thought Spellsinger fixed the proficiency problem with armour. Hell, I remember him doing it. Did you clear your cache and re-activate the module before running it after the installation of the CMF patch? Anyway, I'd try copying the temple.dll from the directory modules\co8 into your ToEE root directory. This should resolve the problem. The AC thing is like this because your Barbarian has Dodge, furthermore his AC might differ during combat because of flanking, etc. Drinking potions should cause AoOs. Try the solution from above. The chests were changed by a modder, Livonnya (IIRC), who simply thought the locks were too easy, it does seem true due to the fact that lock picking rolls are always 20 + your lock pick skill in ToEE. If it were normal throws then no one would have to change it. Try using guidance and giving your rogue a +1 to next skill check.
If you don't have the CMF installed then you won't have the AoO potion drinking. Check out the General Modification part of the forum for the Cumulative fixpack download thread. Check the first post for the latest version to download. NB: You may need to start a new game if you install the CMF or at least delete .PYC files from the /scr folder.
I am a technical idiot. The files I DLed and installed are about a year old, I just rediscovered it on my machine. Are you telling me the problems I have discovered are fixed now, I need to find new files, DL them, and install everything again? And this will make my current game invalid? (egads to last part) Is there a link to step-by-step instructions then for idiots like me? thanks tons!!!
the second to bottom sticked thread in this forum is called 'Comprehensive ToEE Installation Instructions by Zebedee'
OK I will check that out right now, thank you. But are you saying my files are old and I need to DL new ones? And that my previous game till date will be invalid and I need start over? (Including rolling new characters?) thanks so much....
But are you saying my files are old and I need to DL new ones? yes http://www.co8.org/forum/showpost.php?p=35609&postcount=1 And that my previous game till date will be invalid and I need start over? If you have Co8 5.0.0 MOD installed and you install a CMF, yes - you will need to start a new game and not use previous saved games. (Including rolling new characters?) No, you can keep and use the extra characters you made; the new characters will be 1st level characters again.
