I don't know what's going on... all of a sudden the game is crashing like every 5-10 min. The specifc triggers are: * entering my house * some random encounters * save gaming (very rare) Any ideas? The game ran perfectly smooth for the past few weeks until last night. I haven't changed/updated my windows config. Thanks.
1st thought - Clear the map cache and use an earlier save from before the CTD problems started. In short, I recommend you clear the map cache, defragment your Windows and, then, shutdown and restart your computer. There is an option to clear the map cache in the ToEE Front End (ToEEFE). If you use the ToEE Front End, select the option to clear the map cache. Otherwise, if you do not use the ToEE Front End, read this. Map cache files have temp file names like this. 20-yrkry-cdrtcjq-31enZ cnkngnP 2 enZ ynvgdijI cgno-cnzhqgru-52icv-1enz They are in the following folder if you installed ToEE to the default location, i.e., did not change where the game installs on your computer. "c:\program files\atari\temple of elemental evil\modules\Co8-5.0.0\maps" Delete ONLY the files in the above folder; do NOT delete any of the folders.
OK, i tried the map cache and it didn't help (actually, the setting was already on in the front end, so there wasn't any files in there except for those from the last session). Rrestarting windows didn't help. Now it seems to be crashing just in the middle of combat. very bad... i've never seen a game degrade in stability so quickly in a day (if corrupted files are the issue)... I guess I'll try the defrag now. darn...means I can't play tonite...
Oh BTW, here's some information for you on saving games. Once a saved game has become corrupted, it cannot be un-done.
Does the quicksave corruption screw the whole game and even pre-quicksave savegames? I've restored back to before i first quicksaved, and am still seeing the issues...
For the future: To avoid savegame corruption it is strongly recommended that you turn of your antivirus software's program and data control components. Sadly enough, you may have to start your game all over. Data generated during your game may have become corrupted so it is also crucial that you clear your cache before starting again. I'd suggest turning off the software and trying to load the game first though.
I believed that the autosave should never be used, but also quicksave shouldn't be used, to prevent CTDs? Thanks in advance.
We recommend no one use autosave or quicksave, neither of the two. Use either at your own risk. Both can cause major problems. The bottom line is save your games, yourself.
Sorry, I don't fully understand... clearing the cache is the map cache? I don't have any antivirus software running - i only turn it on manually when i need a scan. it's caused problems before so i don't have it autorun with startup.
You have to, either check the box "clear game cache" in front-end or delete the files manually. To do this enter your ToEE root directory (i.e. C:\Program Files\Temple of Elemental Evil\) and then go to data\scr, there you have to delete every file with .pyc extension (including subfolders), then you go back to the root directory and go to modules\co8\maps\ and delete every file that is in the root directory, DO NOT DELETE THE FOLDERS. I don't know if this will help if you say that you don't have any antivirus on. I would check the common solutions thread for answers why your saves become corrupt.
I think the bottom line is simply that yes, quicksaves and autosaves do become corrupt fairly often. Additionally, your regular saves may get corrupted from time to time as well, though that's somewhat uncommon. You are probably just screwed and will need to reinstall. ToEE has never been and will never be the most stable software out there. Don't use autosave or quicksave next time and you'll better your chances. End of story.
