My game was really dragging, freezing and ctd a lot toward the end. What seemed to have the greatest effect on performance for me was deselecting the accelerate scroll in options. I don't know why but since I tried that the game has not frozen once. (knock wood). I don't know if it'll help any of you but I wanted to mention it just in case. Maybe we could list here whatever adjustments you made that seemed to improve game performance. I had tried deselecting many of the video enhancements but never thought to try this until now. Please excuse this post if this has already been suggested (I haven't read the whole forum but skimmed and didn't see it).
Hey thanks for the feedback, we have all had a crack at fixing some of the performance issues and new ideas are most welcome!
I finished the game without any CTDs (though I did get a few lock-ups in the Earth Node, of all places - one of which I could not get past, and I had to restart my comp). Go go Circle of Eight! I am now playing through with the 5.0.3.
Well, my first CTD (using 5.0.3). It crashed on the overland map back from Imery Meadows to Hommlet. I had just defeated the Skeleton Priest & Co. at Rainbow Rock. Things were going very, very slow on the overland map (I have never witnessed that before). Then an encounter with Stirges (x4) showed, I went to accept (accept was in RED) and crash! *sigh*
Update Never let Firefox update itself in the background while playing ToEE  It was namely the cause of my CTDs. Nothing to see here, move along :writersbl
Ok, finally done! My second time through and for some reason I had a lot of trouble with corrupted saves, freezes, and general sluggish performance starting in the fire node. I must have done that node 30 times due to all the problems! Not fun! One other problem I've seen mentioned here is the use of Scather and how the character's turn would not end if taking damage. A way I found around this is when that character is done swinging and won't seem to end their turn, right click on their portrait, drag a potion to the use button (you'll get an error box...click ok). Then you can close inventory, hit the space bar , and it will go to the next character's turn. I think I got fewer corrupt game messages if I just kept creating new games instead of saving over older games. Not sure, but I got no corrupt messages once I tried that. This game had some very enjoyable turn based battles, but the bugs really lessened the overall fun factor. Thanks to any of you who helped me through some buggy spots!
Just general computer tweaking works for me. Turning off background services etc. I did have a post somewhere on one of Krunch's threads with tips etc which might be of use to people. Will find it when I've got a bit of time to catch up on what I've missed the past month or so.
