First, I want to thank those involved with fixing and improving this game. I was really enjoying it up until last night when I noticed something odd... I just got to level 10 with 3 of my characters (I have the TOEEFE with level limit set to 20), but for some reason my fighter and my monk have stopped gaining experience so will not reach level 10. In fact, while my fighter is level 9 his experience seems to have dropped below that required for level 9!! I haven't used the masterwork weapon skill which I saw uses experience points, so I am stumped. Any ideas?
It ..umm.. seems you have installed Co8 and ToEEFE but are playing the standard campaign... or the monsters don't give you XP because they are too easy for you (their CR is too small).
What Maggit said. When you first started your game, did you find yourself on a map with three traders and a woman named Jade Empress who initiated dialogue with you? And when you subsequently arrived in Hommlet for the first time, did a young boy named Kent talk to you? If you're playing the Co8 mod, the splash screen that displays when the game launches will say "Co8 5.0.0" under the ToEE title. If all this sounds very strange and unfamiliar to you, you probably didn't select the Co8 mod from the list of available mods in the ToEEFE menu. Every successful Co8 installation will have at least two available modules to select from: the Co8 modded game, and the original unmodded ToEE. Strange though, I thought the level cap remover worked for any module that you played, not just the Co8 mod.
When you first started your game, did you find yourself on a map with three traders and a woman named Jade Empress who initiated dialogue with you? No to this one. And when you subsequently arrived in Hommlet for the first time, did a young boy named Kent talk to you? Yes to this one. If you're playing the Co8 mod, the splash screen that displays when the game launches will say "Co8 5.0.0" under the ToEE title. I see this when I start the game, yes. Why would 4 of my characters gain experience and level up properly but 2 don't? Strange though, I thought the level cap remover worked for any module that you played, not just the Co8 mod. One thing I may have done when I started that may have messed it up...??? I started the game (I think character creation?) without noticing the need to select the Co8 mod from the TOEEFE, so those two characters may have been created from that. Then I realized I needed to select the mod and did and restarted the game creating new characters. I guess it could be that those two characters where created "outside" the mod so they don't conform to the mod rules? I am going to keep playing and use the console to level up those two characters when the others level up. I can't think of any other recourse...I am much too far along to start again!
No, that wouldn't be the problem. The character pools are kept seperate between the original module and Co8's module. The only thing I can think of is if it was just a bad installation. You installed Co8 5.0.0, otherwise you wouldn't see Kent. But then, you should have also gone immediately to the caravan, because that's been integrated. It just doesn't match up.
You do realise the Front End DEFAULTS to 20, so in fact you SHOULDN'T set it? You only check the level limit box if you want to LIMIT it: otherwise, leave the box unchecked and the default limit will be 20. Sorry if u knew that!
Ok. What I discovered tonight that I didn't realize... If one of my group dies and is resurected, they lose a lot of experience pts, (explains the "loss" of experience points for two of my characters). Is this normal? They both seem to be gaining experience points again so that seems to have worked itself out but I don't know how or why. Thanks to those of you who offered assistance. One other problem I have is that I went to Verbobonc and left before I killed the dragon (wanted to level up some first) and now I can't get back. I think I read here that it is supposed to be on the map but it isn't. Is there any other way to return?
That is normal. If I had to guess, I'd say that the encounters became too easy for those characters. If your characters are levels significantly above that of the encounter, the game simply won't award experience for such encounters. If some characters are lower than others, some may get experience, and others may not (because it's 'too easy' for some, and not for others). I've seen such a thing happen. Verbobonc isn't on the map picture, but it should be in the list of places on the right if you've been there. Click on the name.
I think it also depends on what version of co8 your using 5.0.2 and up its accessible by the world map.
Just found another prisoner on level 2? of the temple who transported me to Verbobonc. I just finished off the white dragon. It wasn't easy but the last time I tried it (level 5 I think) I got my butt kicked. Thanks everyone for your suggestions!
Allyx's Shopmap is an installable option that can be selected when you install any version of the Co8 5 MODs. If that checkbox option is not selected - not marked with a checkmark, it does not get installed. That would explain, no, not going to the shop map where Jade is located yet, yes, going to Hommlet and meeting and talking with Kent.
