Hi all: Windows Vista is out here, in The States. Does anyone know if it will work with games that run on XP? What's the opinion of Vista from some of you guys that are far more computer savy than I.
From all I've heard about Vista, it's not that great. I've actually heard people say it's worse than when Windows ME came out... IMO, I'd stick with Windows XP, since it's a good system already. Plus, Vista just came out today in the states. It has yet to be tested out properly, and I'm sure there are a ton of bugs still in it. (There always is with Windows.) If you're going to get Vista, I'd at least wait a couple months until some critical bug fixes are out. As far as actual compatability, though, I'd imagine it will still support any game that can be played on Windows XP. It honestly wouldn't make any sense at all if it didn't. But, I don't know for sure, but somebody else will come along and give their opinion, I'm sure.
Are you forgetting SP2 wasn't properly backwards compatable? Thats why we had to patch all our games. Definitely wait for a while, whatever happens.

Ahh...the opinions roll in Myself I ran ME for a long time without problems, until I had to upgrade to XP for certain games. XP pro with Service Pack 2 has served me well so far, but the guys over at Cheap Guys Computers, (they built my new gaming pc) told me that in two years there will be no support for any windows except Vista. Krunch: Thanks for the link, I far exceed the Vista ready stats. I'm gonna wait though, I still don't trust Micro Soft..................................shhhh Bill Gates is probably watching, hehe
I refuse to touch Vista for at least a year. The sheer number of bugs, security issues, the fact that I do not make enough to create a machine powerful enough to run the software, and the fact that I am quite used to XP turns me off to Vista. Why should one have to get a brand new computer JUST BECAUSE Microsoft decided to MAKE the world upgrade... Besides, hasn't anyone at that company heard of Quality Control? Beta testing? Anyone? Anyone?

I've checked out various compatibility lists (and thanks for posting one here, krunch!), looked through some authoritative articles on Vista and I can say that I would like NOT to install it until at least SP1 or (better) SP2 shows up, and until they fix various compatibility problems. In addition, I'm quite pissed off to see that Vista appears to be pretty much a 3D version of Windows XP, so to speak. Well, of course I may sound ironic here and Vista is somewhat more than just a 3D version of WinXP, but anyway - it doesn't look like, given the amount of bugs and security holes there and the lack of important features, it's worth installing right away, especially considering that the majority of important software bundled with Windows Vista can also be installed into WinXP SP2. .NET Framework v3.0? I can always install it into my Windows XP SP2 and be happy. DirectX 10? Well, unless it's "Vista only" (which I doubt, but I haven't checked it out myself so I don't know), I can also install it into my WinXP SP2 and be happy. - Agetian
Okay, I'll bite. ToEE not listed here or on Krunch's complete compatibility list in another post. Stupid question below: According to Bill Gates (heard this on The Daily Show FWIW), there were 5 million people who downloaded and tested the beta version of Vista worldwide. If so, has anyone reading this tried to run ToEE on it yet?
I'll let you in on a little secret. Probably 95% of the 5 million people that tried Vista never even heard of Temple of Elemental Evil. He said himself it was 5 million worldwide, and so far ToEE is only in America and a handful of other countries. And from what I hear, it's still a niche game everywhere it's been released. If someone here would like to be the guinnea pig and test out Vista, which I would seriously like to see, it ain't gonna be me... That's bullshit. Even some of the newest games and computer software coming out to date are still compatible back to at least Windows 2000. I've still seen recent things that will run with Windows 98, and that's been out for...what... 9 years? There's no way in hell Vista will completely take over the Windows market in two years. If it ever does (which I honestly doubt it will), it will take at least four or five years, until XP starts to get to the brink of being obsolete.
