Speaking of protoed, I burned 5.0 and protoed to cd and loaded it on my laptop. 5.0 works fine but protoed doesn't. It's so touchy. Is the download copy protected or something? I've tried 3 times.

@wizgeorge: Empty your Internet Explorer cache and delete its temp files. Then, delete the temp files for your version of Windows. When done, delete any copies of the protoed you have already downloaded and do a defragment of your hard drive, then, shutdown and reboot your computer. Try downloading it after that.

The download I have on my desktop works fine. When I burned the cd, (roxio), I didn't get any errors. I can't download to my laptop, I don't have a router. I got my roadrunner cable, but if I disconnect it from my desktop and hook it up to the laptop, I have to call the roadrunner helpdesk and get it set up. I did that, and the things you suggested. No go. I did regedit and everything was clean and cool. Neither a direct download or cd copy works on the laptop. The cd copy should have worked. It worked for 5.0. I'm going to buy a router and try again.
P.s . The roadrunner downloads are fast and accurate. I know I have a known good download.

    Hi everybody,

I have a short question to the protos.tab, does somebody know, hoe the game reacts, if the "name" of an object, i.e. a key or item, exists twice or more within the file?

In the dialog of the troll with key, the dialog asks for 4401 (npc.item_find(4401)) but in protos.tab, 4401 exists 4 times, each with another link (ided #) to description.mes. But how does the game find out which of the 4401 items it must check for?

Same occurs with an generic 5811, which is an elemental orb, but also s.th. else...

    Can anybody help?

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards,
    Manduran

The column your looking at exists just as a script reference id for the proto object (somebody correct me if I'm wrong). If you look a the 4 proto objects which have 4411 in that column, they are all Troll Keys from different directions so it makes sense that any of them would allow you access.

As far as diferentiating the individual items that's handled by the proto ID # 10016-10019 in this case.

Yes, thank you. Seems to be clearer now with the keys ;)
I assume, the double 5811 is an error then...

Let's say I want to change Otis to make him a 10th level Ranger as in PnP. Let's say I want to assign him these three favored enemies: goblinoids +4, elementals +2, and evil outsiders +4. How do you get these extra bonuses to apply properly. Is there a special order? Or is it necessary to repeat goblinoids twice, etc...?

Edit: I have answered my own question. Repeating the feat listing in protos.tab increases the bonus by +2. So, now my question is why was it that Troika felt that having Ranger NPCs were too difficult to implement? (I read that somewhere)

Do weapons have a separate reach parameter? I mean, the Holy Ranseur is really really long so it should have a bigger reach, no?

Hmmm.. have a look at a known reach weapon, such as the longspear, and see what it says (I don't have ProtoEd on this PC).

The SRD says its a reach weapon, so yes, it should be.

I suspect it is column #30, except that the Falchion has a really low value which seems odd. Ranged weapons are all set to 12, and weapons with chains (Spiked Chain, Flail) are all set to 0.

Range is col#64, but there is no entry or explanation for longspear and ransuer. A regular spear is 20, so maybe a longspear/ransuer should be 30? Or is range only for missile weapons/spells, etc? There is no entry for reach or is it determined by weapon class? No idea what col#30 is for weapons. Would be nice to know I guess?

No, thats range when thrown I think (you can throw a regular spear if you absolutely need to). I'll see if I can figure this out :)

I guess it's just a coincidence that category# increases with the length of the weapon. I can't think of any other column that corresponds to weapon reach.

Column 6 seems to correspond roughly to a creature's size. Is it the creature's height? If so, what units of measurement are used? Inches? Centimeters?
