I was wondering if it's possible to make
tower shields work like in PnP, that is to
make them give -2 penalty to attack and
to make them usable only for fighters if
a character has not taken the proper feat.
I wonder if this needs hacking the dll or can
one simply enable the feat (no 342 I think)
in the dll plus change some entries in protos
that would correspond to the tower shield
    proficiency.

    {342}{Tower Shield Proficiency}

Yup, there it is all right... I'll throw in the SRD so other ignorant folks like me won't have to go hunting for it.

    TOWER SHIELD PROFICIENCY [GENERAL]
    Prerequisite: Shield Proficiency.
Benefit: You can use a tower shield and suffer only the standard penalties.
Normal: A character who is using a shield with which he or she is not proficient takes the shield’s armor check penalty on attack rolls and on all skill checks that involve moving, including Ride.
Special: Fighters automatically have Tower Shield Proficiency as a bonus feat. They need not select it.

I'm happy to have a go at adding the feat and seeing what happens (I like to watch :p) but the -2 issue will probably need a .dll hack.

Damn, there goes my strategy of equiping druids with masterwork wooden tower shields and crafting it to +3. ;)

on a related but different note, I noticed the info for Tower shields states there is a maximum dexterity boost to AC when using them, much as Armour has - in the case of Tower shields no more than +2 to AC from Dex.

Perfectly reasonable if you're playing properly and your platemail wearing front line warriors have reasonably normal stats like 16str,12dex,18 con etc. - but if you happen to have some warriors with 18+ dex then the shield would restrict the bonus to AC.

    ...except it doesn't.

It's allowing full AC bonus, only restricted by the main armour (which in my test cases was +4 - 18 dex and elven chain mail)

But if it has the proto number corresponding to armor
it is editable, and may work, I think.

    -------------------------------------------------------------
Actually Tower shields have the +2 DEX max bonus
in the protos and it works. At least in the KotB protos.

I just had an idea. Is Spellslinger able to add new feats to
classes? You know, something like the monk now has,
placeholder feats. Would he be able to add an unused
weapon's feat to the Fighter? Lets say, the whip? Then we could
assign the whip proficiency to every warrior, change its name
to Tower Shield... and then change the proficiency in protos.
    Wouldn't it work?

@ Phil, I see what you meant back then. The penalty doesn't
apply even though it is listed in the protos. Tower shields are
    badly broken.

Thats not a bad idea... many of those proficiencies were grabbed by Cujo for his new weapons, but there would be bound to be one we could spare somewhere. Wouldn't even need a .dll hack. Hmmm... I like this :)
