Can you give me a good reason to have a wizard instead of a sorcerer? I mainly use spellcaster as damage machines, casting MMs, FBs and all damaging spells one after the other. The sorcerer has less spells to chose from, but it more versatile (because he can cast whatever he knows) and have 2 slots more than the wizard (unless he is specialized in a school, which reduces this to 1).

So, can you give me a good reason why I should choose a wizard over a sorcerer?

    Thanks!

    In one word...

    Crafting.

Wizards are, bar none, the most versatile crafters in the game with the posibillity of an extensive collection of spells and bonus class feats for magic item creation and metamagic feats, they are IMO indespensible.

If you use your spellcaster for just magic missiles and fireballs then sorcerer is your best choice. But don't forget to take Highten spell feat. Thus you will be able to cast your every spell at greatest power at any level. If you don't like to get into details of lots of different spells, chose sorcerer. And... Don't read further.

I also first started ToEE with a sorcerer instead of wizard in my party and took Spugnour with me. During the gameplay he became very powerful and interesting to play and to levelup, while sorcerer appeared too dull and boring for me.

If you use you spellcaster just as fireball thrower it's enough to use sorcerer. If you like to use various magic you'd better chose wizard. Wizards may use a wide variety of spells suited for different situations while awkward sorcerer should wait until another level if he has memorized the "wrong" spell.

When a wizard levelups he may use (learn or buy or find) lot's of useful spells. At least every useful. While sorcerer takes just one. It's boring to have just one when with wizard you can take all. Sorcerer should wait until the other levelup to gain another 1 new spell and 2 more levelups to gain 3d spell. When sorcerer levelups to a higher level he may still be offered to learn (at this time useless) low level spells. While wizard upgrades his spell-system in right time.

Sorcerer grows in spell levels slower. That means that 50% of all gameplay he doesn't have access to the best known spells which are already available to a wizard of the same level. For example sorcerer will wait for Fireball spell for 5000exp more than a wizard and 9000exp more to get Cone of cold or Cloudkill spells. Imagine how many battles you will fight without Cloudkill which you could already have if you have chosen wizard class?

Wizards have additional feats and may start to craft weapons and armor at 5 exp level, while others gain additional feat only at level 6. They can easily craft Keen weapons while taking Keen spell for crafter-sorcerer is the real pain because in this case he misses the highly needed spell fireball... and again... has to wait for the next levelup. Wizards may use these additional feats to gain quickly better specialisation in magic.

Wizards may become powerfull conjurers. It's a very powerful school in magic. It can summon cool clouds and cool monsters. While with sorcerer you feel awkward to do many things. With sorcerer you may do only one thing well - that only spell that you choose at levelup.

Wizard can specialize thus he can cast just 1 spell less than a sorcerer per spell-level. This difference becomes even less significant for greater experience levels. Wizards may scribe scrolls thus sorcerers lose their last benefit of spell quantity. And sorcerers should waste a feat to gain Scribe scroll. This feat is the key to the almost unlimited spellcasting and wizards already have it. In fact I think that sorcerer is a highly downgraded class... even though he can use Bluff, longspears and throw javelins.

BTW in ToEE sorcerer needs a cloak to increase his charisma to strengthen his spells. Thus he will not use cloak of resistance and always will have worse resistance rolls. While wizard needs some headband to increase his intellect and thus can also put on cloak of resistance.

    1) Scribe Scroll, by far the best feat in the game for spell casters, for free at level one.

    2) Bonus feats at levels 5 and 10.

    3) As Allyx mentioned, Wizards rock as item crafters, and item crafting is incredibly useful in ToEE.

    4) Can learn every arcane spell in the game if you take the time.

    5) Casts spells of every level sooner that Sorcerers, and with Scribe Scroll can do so just as often (though at a cost in time, gold and XP).
