How strong do you make your heroes?

    So, what stats do you give to your PC's? Just interesting, how strong do you like your heroes to be? Do you roll untill six 18's will appear, or do you use NWN-like system? What are your best rolled stats?
    Once I read, someone said he always rolled untill he got three 18's, I also had three 18's rolled few times, but other three stats were so bad, that I never used these rolls. My best roll, which I used was 18, 18, 17, 16, 15, 13. I made a spokeman paladin from this - 18Str, 15Dex, 17Con, 13Int, 16Wiz, 18Cha. This was a very smart spokesman, as well as a strong fighter with high magic resistance.
    Later I thought of making a rule to myself not to make too powerful heroes. But nevertheless I really want to see my PC's with some heroic stats. So now I hexedit all of my PC's with following stats: 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13. Then I distribute stats depending on generated class. Thus a ranger would have 17Str, 18Dex, 16Con, 14Int, 15Wiz, 13Cha. And a cleric may have 17Str, 15Dex, 16Con, 13Int, 18Wiz, 14Cha.
    Thus I feel comfortable with having powerful enough heroes and yet not too overpowered (like 18/18/18/18/18/18). Thus I also save time instead of rerolling hundred times when rolls are not satisfactory.
    So, what stats do you give to your PC's? Just interesting, how strong do you like your heroes to be? Do you roll untill six 18's will appear, or do you use NWN-like system? What are your best rolled stats?

    my best rolled stats were 18,18,18,16,16,14. I was very excited, but now I just used the All 18's cheat to make resonable stats as I see fit for the charcter, I'll make a few rolls before hand if I want the character to have a <8 score in anything eg a barbarian with 4 Int.

    Well, a real DM wouldn't let you get away with that =p I don't abuse my stats, but I do reroll a bit to get something slightly above average. I like to have a 17 or 18 for each character's main class stat and then have two other stats that are somewhere between 14-16 (usually for con, dex/str). The rest of the stats I let fall where they may, although I don't usually accept anything lower than an 8.

    My druid lucked out and got:

    14 str
    17 dex
    14 con
    15 int
    17 wis
    14 chr

    in just 1 reroll.

    I completed ToEE around 6 months ago and have just come back to replay it. I'm having a lot of fun again. I hate the NWN series combat and party systems =/

    I use a 25 or a 50 point buy right now. The 25 point buy is enough for a good specialist while still keeping things challenging. The 50 point buy is used in cases where one character is filling multiple roles (say a Wizard/Rogue or a Rogue/Fighter). I don't generally like to play specialists who don't have an 18 in their key stat, or generalists who don't have 16s in their key stats.

    I usually try to hit two 18's, two between 12 and 16, and two dump stats at 10 or lower. If I hit that range, I'm usually satisfied enough to work with a character.

    If I get a 16 or 17 instead of one of the 18's, I can usually work with it. But, I absolutely need at least one 18, or I refuse to keep the rolls.

    I need at least a 17 in the key stat, and I can't stomach more than one below 10. Its rare you have to reroll more than a few times though, I find.

    I think I prefer point buy over rolling because I've got a fairly clear idea of who a character is as I put together a group, and point buy gets me there faster. Also, when I roll I end up going forever looking for an uber-roll. ;)

    That is true. If I sart to roll, I roll and roll and roll... But the point buy system is only good for making good specialist classes. Thus fighter requires only high strength and constitution and may have all other abilities at low level. Wizard may have just good intelligence and have some points in constitution and he may lower all other abilities.
    But such classes as paladin or rogue or bard may require more than one or two abilities at high level. Thus paladin needs strenght, constitution, charisma, wisdom. Rogue needs high dexterity, intelligence, charisma, and even wisdom (for spot and listen) and should not forget about strength and constitution. With 13/12/12/12/12/12 point buy system such classes are especially pathetic. It's so boring to play with such pathetic heroes, as you se how they fail time after time.
    It's even strange why such a low point buy system is added to the rolling system, which easily gives much better results.
    Most of all though I like BG rolling system where there are certain minimum and maximum rolling values for each class. Thus paladins always rolled somehow high charisma, strength and constitution rolls. Rogues always had substantial dexterity and (as far as I remember) intelligence.
    The best generating system I could dream of could be a point buy system, where all classes have their profile abilities be fixed at some average and rather high level thus giving classes with lots of profile abilities some more bonuses from this.

    I use the editor to "adjust my rolls" i'll cut a few points from one to place and put them on another. however, now i just customize dependant on what i need for a "reasonable" character. I feel like i'm cheating if i have more than 3 stats at +3 or greater.
    however, i'm trying one of my characters as a solo adventure and pretty closely maxed him out. if any of the prime characteristics for a multiclassed character are <16. the xps suck.

    once a character is above 8th level, except for str to hit with. most characters can shlep along with one stat +4, 2 stats +3, and others fine.

    any multi classed character without solid stats sucks for advancing with less xps.

    thus: i maxed out my solo character to make him free to "experiment" with different classes at different levels.

    a solo character needs to have the ability to use survival (to control random encounters), pick locks, and excell at npc interactions. some basic spell casting would be nice but might not be required. i'm gonna try without spellcaster professions. Though not having stone skin wands around, almost seems counter intuitive.

    I use a 15 point-buy system, via the console. High stats make the game boring imo.

    I'm of the very old school where "average stats" meant a 10, not a 16.

    I re-roll until I get at least one stat at 16+, none under 8 and a total cumuled stats greater or equal to 69 (11.5 average).

    I like a little randomness for party composition so I create a 4+(1D10/2) characters' pool. I roll 1D10 for race (1-3 human, 4-9 dwarf to halfling, 10 freely choosen) and 1D10 for gender (1-6 male, 7-10 female). Each PC is created using the above stat rule. Then I choose the class depending on the stats in the order they were drawn. I don't move the highest stat and allow myself only one swap between 2 other stats. Feats are choosen. Gods, domains and wizard specializations are all randomly rolled.

    I finally choose 5 PC from the pool and go on ...

    The character I create must have at least one 18
    and it has to be it's main attribute, when it comes
    to classes like monk, bard, rogue or ranger the stats
    have to be as highest as possible. Oh, and a Fighter has
    to have at least 13 INT to gain tactical feats like combat
    expertise or improved trip, well DEX is good too, especially
    for Whirlwind attack. ;) When it comes to PnP, I can re-roll
    once but when the second rolls are worse I have to take them
    (a cruel house rule ;)).

    Hi all:

    One of my favorite parts of any crpg is character generation, I enjoy rolling for stats it reminds me of table top gaming :)........without that old meany, (DM) to stop me from rerolling. I have to have three stats at 16 or better and nothing below 10, seeing a negative number in the bonus spot scares the bejesus out of me.

    Well I have... sadly been playing P&P for around 20 years (since I was 7) now most of this time I was not actualy playing. You know 2 months this year, 4 months the previous year.. that kind of thing. In 3.5 they not you are playing a hero... not a common person, and as such they expect you to have above normal stats... averaging a MIN of 13. So anytime I roll up a toon, I roll for that minimum.

    As an addition, most GM's I have played with in just about any game allow rerolls on at least 1 .. 1. In D&D they usualy also use the 4D6 rolling method... take the 3 highest. I do not like the roll generator here so I instead roll the stats on paper using my normal gaming method, and then pop them in at start up of creation.

    I think this is my first post for those here that have participated in any fashion in fixing modding or giving feedback/advice ... YOU ROCK... all of you ... thanks.
