Hm . . . I realize we're edging into nebulous territory with this discussion, but to continue with the gambling anology . . . would it be 'normal' to deal 5 rounds of poker and have one player receive twos to sevens in all one case each time? That's the equivelent of what I see happening with the RNG, though of course I haven't crunched the numbers with that equation.

To be a bit clearer, I don't expect the RNG to roll 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 3, 7, 11, 15, 19, etc., etc. in a steady progression. But when I see consistent 19s and 20s come up for raging barbarians, or consistent 1s and 2s come up for 18 strength PCs, or consistent 14s come up for enemies that need 13 or higher combined with their bonuses to hit AC 21 PCs, particularly in mission-critical scenarios, my spider senses start tingleing. I'm not neccesarily suggesting that some nefarious conspiracy is at work here; in fact I'm not really sure what I'm suggesting. But homey here has sort of lived and died by being able to tell where the bear shit in the buckwheat, so to speak, and when it comes to ToEE's RNG I get the distinct impression that I'm being played. ;)

Either that or I have a gross misconception of what the RNG is actually supposed to be doing. :blegh:

Gaear, are you suggesting that there is motive in the RNG? Have we perhaps found the first example of actual Artificial Sentience?

And let me say that I fully agree with you. Far too often I too have noticed the computer seemingly rolling *just* the number it needs to hit/save/succeed, or max-ing powerful enemy attacks or min-ing my own efforts.

I tried to Fascinate the white dragon who could only save on a 20, so of course it did. When I sent my fighter up against the Bodaks, where he could only fail on a 1, combat after combat, reload after reload, about 20% of the time he failed.

    A new classic! Must be a midwestern-ism.

    Speaking of clumps....

I think we ought to "pin down" those Troika guys to find out if a bear shit in our buckwheat or not. I think it's a grand conspiracy, greater than even Atari's undemining of future module development by refusing to release the tools...

Smoret, et al, if you're reading this, please help us! ;)

Hehehe, i have phenominal luck with the dice in my P&P sessions, to the point that my DM's banned my rolling of party initiative, party surprise rolls, and any other group related rolling. they madfe me swap dice with an annoying frequency, use their dice, lend my dice to them etc etc, all to no avail. As a DM i have to moderate my rolling, and let SOME of the monsters miss sometimes.
One fine example was a human warrior in MERP. We played with the "opened ended wrap-around" system, where if your roll was high enough to score a second hit after the initial 150 was taken off of the total, you got a second hit in. Our party managed to stumble upon a drake in the depths of an underground ruin....Unfortunately for my GM, my warrior rolled an 826 + OB of 141. Taking away the DB of said Drake (135) my final roll was 832... a massive 5 wrap critical... unfortunately for mr Drake, he didn't make it past the carnage of those criticals......
