When I go upstairs in some of the homes in Hommlet, there is a very dark, trippy song that plays. I have no idea what it might be called, as the vocals are mostly growls. I half expect the boogy man to come up from under the bed when I hear this song.

It creates a cool mood, though it would be even cooler if there was some sort of encounter or storyline associated with it. Some deep, dark secret in the attic of an unsuspecting family in Hommlett.

So what song is this, and who's the artist?

If it is actually an MP3 file, then you might look at the tags of the file. MP3 tags can contain information on that. You'll need a program which can read that, but there are explorer extensions for that out there, too.

Hehe, I think he's actually talking about a new track that Shiningted added for his Desperate Housewives mod...

As to the exact details, like where he found it? Who made it? I don't know.

It is called "Cave", and is from the first Diablo video game. This music played in the deepest dungeon levels before one entered Hell. It was composed by Matt Uelmen.

The original artist is Mike Oldfield. There are two or three different occasions where you hear excerpts from one (or more?) of his albums with the Desperate Housewives mod. "Tubular Bells" is definitely one of them, possibly excerpts from "Ommadawn" or "Hergest Ridge" also. Haven't spun a Mike Oldfield LP in awhile but I recognized him right away. Very nice touch!

Interesting ! I'm an Mike Oldfield fan since the 80s, and if you've got any questions about his music, I might try to answer that ! ;)

But since I don't have that MOd (want to play TOEE "plain" without mods for now), I can't say more on that.

Thanks for the info, though for as much as I played Diablo back in the day, I'd expect that I'd recognize a song from that game. So I'm wondering if the song I'm referring to is not something else. Oh, and I should probably point out that I opted not to install Desperate Housewives this time around. I read that it was a humorous mod, and after getting back into the game after like an 18 month hiatus, I was looking to play a "serious" game.

On a slight tangent, Diablo is actually the computer game that "corrupted" me. There was actually a time, back in my late high school years and through my early 20s, that I thought video games were a total waste of time. Then my girlfriend of 5 years broke up with me (she was actually my fiance) and I found a sudden need to drown my sorrows in something. Instead of alchohol, I happened to see Diablo on the shelf and thought, 'I feel like hell. Why not take a trip there.' Doom II was another that I picked up around the same time, and it was kind of downhill from there, as those 2 titles were enough to change me into a "gamer."

Anyhow, slightly back on topic, I've heard all of the music associated with Diablo many, many times, and the song I'm referring to in ToEE is completely unfamiliar to me. It kind of reminds me of what GWAR might do they were ever to do a ballad. It has heavy drums, but the main guitars in it are acoustic, played heavy, and do a fair amount of harmonic, interactive stuff (ala Iron Maiden). There is also a piano/keyboard in the song, which really adds an odd/interesting flavor. Once it gets going, there is a long electric guitar section that feels a little more like grass roots rock. Oh, and there is some werewolf-esque howling in it! I'd describe the song as GWAR meets Iron Maiden, meets Rocky Horror Picture show, and this is one of their more mellow songs.

I just finished listening to the song again. It plays in the upstairs of Ploceus' house (among other places). I'm pretty sure this is a Co8 thing, as I've never heard it on previous play throughs. Also, there is a song that plays in the abandoned temple in Hommlett (the one near brother Smyth's blacksmith) that I think is part of whatever mod added the other song I described above.

The tune upstairs from Ploceus' house (with the growling and howling and what-not) is Mike Oldfield, not positive from which album. IIRC you don't need to have the Desperate Housewives mod for it to play, but it plays with the Co8 5.0 mod. I don't recognize the tune that plays in the abandoned temple.

Growling and howling ? The description sounds like part two of Tubular Bells.

The one in the abandoned temple is "Cave" for certain. I thought there was something going on to make it play in other places...? Perhaps not.

My condolences on your life circumstances. You might find that it really is true: every thing happens for a reason. I had a bad (and I mean BAD) nervous breakdown at 25. It got me back on my mountain bike and I live in the mecca of mountainbiking in the world, the North Shore. Sometimes bad things happen but there is always an upside if you are willing to look for it. I ask that you not focus on gaming totally, but find active exercises and hobbies to help aleviate the stress. Trust me, this is coming from someone who knows. TOEE is a part of my life, but gaming is not its totality.

I know we must all move on but it is not that one stumbles, but if they get back up and run faster.

Appreciate your words blackfly. I should say that break up I mentioned actually happened almost 10 years ago, and I now look back on it as one of the best things that ever happened to me. It allowed me to meet my current wife, who I've been married to for 5 years now, and have a wonderful 3 year old son with. I also have a good career in IT--was actually just named VP in my company. So many great things have happened in my life since then, and many of those I don't think would have happened had I remained with my previous fiance. I was too young to have known what I was doing back then.

Sure, I spent a lot of time escaping into computer games after the break up, and was quite devastated for a good long time. Then there was also that 3 year bout I had with Everquest. Yikes. So much time wasted. But your words are true.

These days my gaming time is extremely limited, and that's on purpose. Family, career, life... there's too much out there to experience to spend all your time staring at your computer screen. But that doesn't mean that I don't take the time to enjoy great games like ToEE, and I'm even considering taking a couple days off work when NWN2 comes out next month, send the wife to her sister's for a couple of days ;).

You really should just install the mod. ToEE is pretty underwhelming without it.

Everquest was an interesting "chapter" of my life. My boss at the time was an absolute addict, and he really enticed me into it. He played at work, and didn't mind me doing so as well. I wasn't married when I started, and I lived on my own, so there was absolutely no one to tell me when I had crossed the line. I played at work "during lunch" and when 5PM rolled around it was time for a little more. Then I'd head home, pick up some dinner, and play until it was nice and late. And if I ended up gettng into work a little late due to a late night of playing, my boss was pretty forgiving. And weekends... well those were often REALLY over the top.

The recent WOW Soutpark episode definitely struck a chord with me, and reminded me of why I swear off any and all MMORPGs like they are eveeilll.

Between getting married and having my son I've certainly had to reevalute my priorities. Somehow explaining to my wife that I can't go and spend time with my son yet because I'm deep in a dungeon and I'm the shaman, so if I leave there will be no one who can slow the mobs, so I need to wait until I find a replacement, just really got old. Really old.
